Dos Boots Mezcal Espadín Joven (200 ml)

Agave: Espadín (Agave angustifolia) | ABV: ~45% | Origin: Las Margaritas, Oaxaca

Dos Boots Mezcal Joven is a vibrant and approachable artisanal spirit that honors the "Two Boots" philosophy—connecting the hard work of the fields to the celebration of the fiesta. This 200ml format is the perfect introduction to their flagship Espadín, offering a genuine taste of the Oaxacan Sierra in a travel-friendly size.

Crafted by Maestro Mezcalero Petronilo Rosario Altamirano, this mezcal is steeped in tradition. The agave is roasted in underground conical earthen pits, crushed by a stone tahona wheel, and double-distilled in copper alembic stills. The result is a clean, structural spirit that balances the natural sweetness of the Espadín agave with the rugged minerality of the soil.

Tasting Notes

  • Nose: Fresh and inviting. The aroma opens with a full-throated note of roasted agave and wet clay. As it breathes, layers of fresh herbs (sage and mint) emerge, alongside subtle hints of cocoa butter, wildflowers, and a gentle, non-overpowering smoke.
  • Palate: Smooth yet robust. The mouthfeel is velvety, delivering a "sparkling" sensation typical of quality traditional mezcal. Expect flavors of green vegetables (roasted green beans), cracked black pepper, and a savory nuttiness (peanuts or walnuts). A distinct sweetness of cooked agave anchors the mid-palate, preventing the smoke from dominating.
  • Finish: Crisp and mineral-forward. The finish is long and dry, leaving lingering impressions of slate, warm soil, and a touch of cinnamon spice.

Serving Recommendation

This 200ml flask-sized bottle is ideal for a casual tasting or a gift.

  • Neat: Sip it slowly from a clay copita or small glass to appreciate the savory "peppery" notes.
  • Cocktail: Its clean profile makes it excellent for a Mezcal Mule (with ginger beer and lime) or an Oaxacan Old Fashioned, where the agave notes can stand up to the bitters without being drowned out.

What is the difference between Tequila & Mezcal?

Tequila is a type of mezcal, much like how scotch and bourbon are types of whiskey.

Tequila and mezcal are both types of agave-based spirits that are popular in Mexico, but there are some key differences between the two. Tequila is made exclusively from the blue agave plant, which is primarily grown in the area surrounding the city of Tequila, about 40 miles northwest of Guadalajara. Mezcal, on the other hand, can be made from any type of agave plant, and is often made using traditional, labor-intensive methods.

One of the most noticeable differences between tequila and mezcal is their flavor. Tequila is typically smooth and subtle, with hints of fruit and spices, while mezcal has a more complex, smoky flavor that comes from the roasting of the agave hearts before they are fermented and distilled.

Another difference between the two spirits is their production process. Tequila is typically made using modern industrial methods, while mezcal is often produced using traditional techniques that have been passed down for generations. This can give mezcal a more authentic, artisanal character.

In general, tequila is considered to be a more refined and sophisticated spirit, while mezcal is often viewed as a more rustic and traditional drink. Both are popular in Mexico and are enjoyed around the world, so the best way to decide which one you like is to try them both and see which one suits your tastes.
