Rey Campero Tepeztate Artesanal Mezcal 200ml

A journey into the wild heart of Oaxaca.

Rey Campero Tepeztate Artesanal Mezcal, in this compact 200ml bottle, offers a unique opportunity to experience one of the most revered and complex wild agave spirits. Tepeztate (Agave marmorata) is a giant, slow-maturing maguey that can take up to 20-30 years to reach harvest. It grows on rocky, near-vertical cliffs, demanding immense skill and patience from the tlachiqueros. This struggle against nature creates a mezcal of unparalleled depth and character.

Rey Campero, meaning 'King of the Countryside,' embodies the artisanal traditions of Candelaria Yegolé, a small village in Oaxaca’s Sierra Sur. The production process is meticulously traditional: wild agaves are roasted in subterranean earthen ovens, crushed by a stone tahona (mill), fermented in open-air wooden vats using only natural airborne yeasts and local river water, and double-distilled in copper pot stills.

This small bottle packs the same intense and wild experience of the full-sized version.

Tasting Notes:

  • Aroma: Highly expressive and complex, bursting with sweet vegetal notes like green and white pepper, alongside distinct hints of banana leaf and coriander seed. Fresh-cut grass, wildflowers, and a subtle salinity are underpinned by the characteristic aroma of the wild Tepeztate itself.
  • Palate: The entry is rich and smooth, with a delicate balance of sweetness from cooked agave. The intense, green vegetal notes from the nose translate directly, offering a multi-layered profile of roasted chili, garden vegetables, and exotic fruits. A persistent minerality, akin to slate and river stone, provides structure.
  • Finish: Exceptionally long and evolving, with a harmonious return of white flowers, yellow pepper, and a stimulating kick of Sichuan peppercorn and jalapeño heat. The finale is clean, earthy, and lingering, a true reflection of the challenging terrain where the agave grew.

Rey Campero Tepeztate is a mezcal for connoisseurs and those seeking a wild, profound flavor journey. It is best enjoyed neat at room temperature to fully unlock its layered complexity and intense spirit.

Use the 200ml size to explore this single-varietal masterpiece, perfect for comparison tastings or a unique gift.

What is the difference between Tequila & Mezcal?

Tequila is a type of mezcal, much like how scotch and bourbon are types of whiskey.

Tequila and mezcal are both types of agave-based spirits that are popular in Mexico, but there are some key differences between the two. Tequila is made exclusively from the blue agave plant, which is primarily grown in the area surrounding the city of Tequila, about 40 miles northwest of Guadalajara. Mezcal, on the other hand, can be made from any type of agave plant, and is often made using traditional, labor-intensive methods.

One of the most noticeable differences between tequila and mezcal is their flavor. Tequila is typically smooth and subtle, with hints of fruit and spices, while mezcal has a more complex, smoky flavor that comes from the roasting of the agave hearts before they are fermented and distilled.

Another difference between the two spirits is their production process. Tequila is typically made using modern industrial methods, while mezcal is often produced using traditional techniques that have been passed down for generations. This can give mezcal a more authentic, artisanal character.

In general, tequila is considered to be a more refined and sophisticated spirit, while mezcal is often viewed as a more rustic and traditional drink. Both are popular in Mexico and are enjoyed around the world, so the best way to decide which one you like is to try them both and see which one suits your tastes.
