Magia Extraña Extra Añejo Tequila

A Masterpiece of Mexican Craftsmanship

Magia Extraña Extra Añejo is a premium, small-batch tequila crafted for those who appreciate the deep, barrel-aged complexity typically reserved for fine cognacs. Produced at NOM 1581 in the heart of the Tequila Valley (El Arenal, Jalisco), this 100% Blue Weber Agave expression is aged for a minimum of three years in select French Oak barrels.

The name, which translates to "Strange Magic," reflects the transformative aging process where the bright, peppery soul of the agave evolves into a rich, dark spirit with sophisticated wood influence.

Tasting Notes

Color: Deep, translucent amber with brilliant copper highlights. Nose: Decadent and aromatic. Initial notes of heavy French oak and leathery tobacco are followed by sweet layers of dark chocolate, citrus zest, and cooked agave. Palate: A luxurious, velvety texture. It opens with the sweetness of candied fruits and honey, which quickly deepens into complex flavors of cocoa, grape, and toasted almonds. The French oak provides a refined structure reminiscent of an aged Brandy. Finish: Exceptionally long and smooth. It leaves a lingering warmth of vanilla bean, spice, and a soft, earthy sweetness that invites another sip.

Why It Stands Out

While many Extra Añejos use American Bourbon barrels, Magia Extraña’s use of French Oak imparts a softer tannin structure and more delicate fruity notes. It is a "bridge" spirit—perfect for the whiskey connoisseur or cognac lover looking to explore the most refined tier of the tequila world.

Ideal Serve:

This celebratory spirit deserves to be enjoyed neat in a Glencairn or a snifter. Avoid chilling or adding ice, as the cold can mute the delicate chocolate and citrus nuances that define this expression.

What is the difference between Tequila & Mezcal?

Tequila is a type of mezcal, much like how scotch and bourbon are types of whiskey.

Tequila and mezcal are both types of agave-based spirits that are popular in Mexico, but there are some key differences between the two. Tequila is made exclusively from the blue agave plant, which is primarily grown in the area surrounding the city of Tequila, about 40 miles northwest of Guadalajara. Mezcal, on the other hand, can be made from any type of agave plant, and is often made using traditional, labor-intensive methods.

One of the most noticeable differences between tequila and mezcal is their flavor. Tequila is typically smooth and subtle, with hints of fruit and spices, while mezcal has a more complex, smoky flavor that comes from the roasting of the agave hearts before they are fermented and distilled.

Another difference between the two spirits is their production process. Tequila is typically made using modern industrial methods, while mezcal is often produced using traditional techniques that have been passed down for generations. This can give mezcal a more authentic, artisanal character.

In general, tequila is considered to be a more refined and sophisticated spirit, while mezcal is often viewed as a more rustic and traditional drink. Both are popular in Mexico and are enjoyed around the world, so the best way to decide which one you like is to try them both and see which one suits your tastes.
