Lágrimas Del Valle 2022 "El Chiqueño" Plata

Tequila Lágrimas del Valle is a masterclass in terroir. As a "Vino de Mezcal" style Tequila, this 2022 Plata expression from the El Chiqueño ranch celebrates the specific soil, climate, and agave of a single estate.

Grown at an altitude of approximately 1,500 meters in the Tequila Valley, the agave here faces unique environmental stressors that concentrate sugars, developing a profile far more complex than your standard silver tequila. Distilled at the legendary Cascahuín distillery (NOM 1123), this is a pure, additive-free expression of the earth.

Tasting Notes

Bottled at 46% ABV, this Plata offers a robust structure that carries the delicate nuances of the agave with exceptional clarity.

  • Appearance: Crystal clear with high viscosity and slow, heavy tears (lágrimas) that cling to the glass, hinting at its rich texture.
  • Aroma: An immediate punch of roasted agave and damp, mineral-rich earth. Beneath the primary notes lie subtle hints of green olive brine, lime zest, and a crack of white pepper.
  • Palate: The mouthfeel is remarkably full-bodied and buttery. It delivers a sophisticated balance of cooked sweet potato and fresh mint, grounded by a distinct "stony" minerality characteristic of the El Chiqueño soil.
  • Finish: Long, savory, and impeccably clean. It leaves a lingering trail of citrus peel and anise, accompanied by a gentle, warming spice that invites another sip.

Why It Stands Out

This isn't just another bottle on the shelf; it's a snapshot of a specific place and time. Because it is a Single Estate release, the 2022 El Chiqueño harvest will never be replicated exactly. It is produced without any additives (no glycerin, sugars, or coloring), ensuring that what you taste is the honest result of traditional brick-oven cooking and copper pot distillation.

Pro Tip:

To truly unlock the valley agave's complexity, serve it neat in a wide-bottomed glass. Let it breathe for a few minutes to allow the vegetal and mineral notes to fully harmonize.

What is the difference between Tequila & Mezcal?

Tequila is a type of mezcal, much like how scotch and bourbon are types of whiskey.

Tequila and mezcal are both types of agave-based spirits that are popular in Mexico, but there are some key differences between the two. Tequila is made exclusively from the blue agave plant, which is primarily grown in the area surrounding the city of Tequila, about 40 miles northwest of Guadalajara. Mezcal, on the other hand, can be made from any type of agave plant, and is often made using traditional, labor-intensive methods.

One of the most noticeable differences between tequila and mezcal is their flavor. Tequila is typically smooth and subtle, with hints of fruit and spices, while mezcal has a more complex, smoky flavor that comes from the roasting of the agave hearts before they are fermented and distilled.

Another difference between the two spirits is their production process. Tequila is typically made using modern industrial methods, while mezcal is often produced using traditional techniques that have been passed down for generations. This can give mezcal a more authentic, artisanal character.

In general, tequila is considered to be a more refined and sophisticated spirit, while mezcal is often viewed as a more rustic and traditional drink. Both are popular in Mexico and are enjoyed around the world, so the best way to decide which one you like is to try them both and see which one suits your tastes.
