La Venenosa Raicilla Puntas: The Pinnacle of the Distiller's Art

For the serious collector and passionate student of agave, La Venenosa Puntas represents an extraordinary, highly limited opportunity to taste the absolute pinnacle of artisanal craft.

In traditional distillation, the "puntas" (or heads) refer to the very first liquid to exit the still during the second distillation phase. For this rare release, master distiller Gerardo Peña selects only the upper portion of the Maximiliana agave hearts and captures the most concentrated, high-proof cut directly above them. The result is an uncompromisingly powerful yet remarkably ethereal spirit that typically rests between 60% and 65% ABV.

Production Profile

  • Maestro Tabernerero: Gerardo Peña (cousin of legendary producer Don Ruben Peña)
  • Agave Source: 100% Agave Maximiliana (locally known as Maguey Lechuguilla)
  • Origin: Jacales, Western Sierra Madre region of Jalisco, Mexico
  • Fermentation: Wild, natural yeasts in a traditional 200-liter oak vat
  • Distillation: Double-distilled in a stainless steel alembic still

Tasting Notes

  • The Nose: Pungent and captivatingly bright. It opens with an intense wave of dried green apples and wild pine needles, closely followed by delicate, perfumed layers of fresh lavender, lemon thyme, and an intriguing, rustic agave funk reminiscent of soft, lactic cream cheese.
  • The Palate: Despite its overproof strength, the texture is completely unexpected: light, silky, and almost weightless as it moves across the palate. Crisp flavors of green apple, juicy grape, and bright orange creamsicle blend beautifully with a sharp, cooling hit of wild spearmint and subtle background notes of clay and anise.
  • The Finish: Bold, exceptionally long, and dry. It leaves a pleasant, lingering tingling sensation with a pop of clean minerality, hints of roasted green pepper, and a final whisper of sweet caramel. It manages to balance high-proof heat with an astounding, effortless elegance.

What is the difference between Tequila & Mezcal?

Tequila is a type of mezcal, much like how scotch and bourbon are types of whiskey.

Tequila and mezcal are both types of agave-based spirits that are popular in Mexico, but there are some key differences between the two. Tequila is made exclusively from the blue agave plant, which is primarily grown in the area surrounding the city of Tequila, about 40 miles northwest of Guadalajara. Mezcal, on the other hand, can be made from any type of agave plant, and is often made using traditional, labor-intensive methods.

One of the most noticeable differences between tequila and mezcal is their flavor. Tequila is typically smooth and subtle, with hints of fruit and spices, while mezcal has a more complex, smoky flavor that comes from the roasting of the agave hearts before they are fermented and distilled.

Another difference between the two spirits is their production process. Tequila is typically made using modern industrial methods, while mezcal is often produced using traditional techniques that have been passed down for generations. This can give mezcal a more authentic, artisanal character.

In general, tequila is considered to be a more refined and sophisticated spirit, while mezcal is often viewed as a more rustic and traditional drink. Both are popular in Mexico and are enjoyed around the world, so the best way to decide which one you like is to try them both and see which one suits your tastes.
