Fuenteseca Reserva 15 Year Extra Añejo
This singular expression is a masterclass in the intersection of patience and terroir. Representing fifteen years of quiet maturation, this liquid is a testament to the vision of Enrique Fonseca, who has pushed the boundaries of what tequila can achieve through exceptionally long aging in a climate that typically demands much shorter stays in the barrel.
The spirit began its journey in American white oak barrels, where it rested for a decade. To achieve its final, profound complexity, the tequila was then transferred to a combination of French oak red wine barrels and dark toasted American oak for the remaining five years. This unconventional double maturation results in a profile that is as rare as the time required to create it.
Tasting Notes
- Nose: The experience opens with deep aromas of cooked agave and dark chocolate. Over time, notes of dried cherries, toasted pecans, and a hint of pipe tobacco emerge from the glass.
- Palate: The texture is exceptionally smooth, offering a rich tapestry of flavors. Intense vanilla and caramel provide a sweet foundation, while layers of baking spice, coffee bean, and baked stone fruit add sophisticated depth.
- Finish: The finish is remarkably long and elegant. It leaves a lingering warmth characterized by woody spice, subtle tannins, and a gentle reminder of the highland agave at its heart.
This is a spirit for the true connoisseur. It is designed to be sipped slowly, providing an evolving experience that rewards the patient observer. Whether as a capstone to a tasting flight or a meditative pour after a long day, it stands as a landmark of modern tequila production.

What is the difference between Tequila & Mezcal?
Tequila is a type of mezcal, much like how scotch and bourbon are types of whiskey.
Tequila and mezcal are both types of agave-based spirits that are popular in Mexico, but there are some key differences between the two. Tequila is made exclusively from the blue agave plant, which is primarily grown in the area surrounding the city of Tequila, about 40 miles northwest of Guadalajara. Mezcal, on the other hand, can be made from any type of agave plant, and is often made using traditional, labor-intensive methods.
One of the most noticeable differences between tequila and mezcal is their flavor. Tequila is typically smooth and subtle, with hints of fruit and spices, while mezcal has a more complex, smoky flavor that comes from the roasting of the agave hearts before they are fermented and distilled.
Another difference between the two spirits is their production process. Tequila is typically made using modern industrial methods, while mezcal is often produced using traditional techniques that have been passed down for generations. This can give mezcal a more authentic, artisanal character.
In general, tequila is considered to be a more refined and sophisticated spirit, while mezcal is often viewed as a more rustic and traditional drink. Both are popular in Mexico and are enjoyed around the world, so the best way to decide which one you like is to try them both and see which one suits your tastes.
