Dos Boots Tepeztate Artesanal Mezcal
A Decades-Old Secret, Revealed The Wild Heart of Oaxaca
Dos Boots Tepeztate Artesanal Mezcal is not merely a spirit; it is a liquid time capsule harvested from the rugged mountains of Oaxaca. It is crafted entirely from 100% wild Maguey Tepeztate (Agave marmorata), an elusive and revered giant among agaves that can take up to 25 years to reach maturity in the wild.
This mezcal represents the pinnacle of traditional production. As indicated on the label, this is true "Mezcal Artesanal." It goes a step further than most by employing one of the most ancient and laborious methods of crushing the cooked agave: "Milling by Hand with Wooden Mallet." This backbreaking technique, used before the introduction of the tahona wheel, ensures that the fibers are gently crushed, preserving the raw, vibrant integrity of the agave without the mechanical influence of modern machinery.
Ultra-Limited Production This is small-batch craftsmanship at its most extreme. Each bottle is a piece of history, hand-numbered to reflect its scarcity. As seen on the bottle, this specific release (Lot T201/25) consisted of only 132 bottles total, making it a rare prize for the serious collector and the adventurous connoisseur.
At 45% ABV, it is bottled at an ideal strength to carry the intense, complex oils of the ancient Tepeztate agave.
Tasting Notes
Maguey Tepeztate is famous for its intense, polarizing, and unbelievably complex flavor profile, often characterized by powerful vegetal and herbal notes derived from its long life in rocky, mineral-rich soil.
- Nose (Aroma): Explosive and vibrant. The nose opens with a powerful hit of raw green vegetation—think crushed jalapeño skins, fresh green bell pepper, and damp jungle floor. Underneath the green intensity lies a distinct mineral quality, like wet river stones, accented by faint notes of tropical fruit rind and a whisper of gentle, sweet smoke.
- Palate (Taste): The mouthfeel is rich, oily, and coating, a testament to the hand-milling process. The palate delivers on the promise of the nose with intense savory heat. Flavors of roasted poblano pepper, fresh cilantro, and white peppercorns dominate, balanced by a surprising underlying sweetness of cooked agave. A deep, earthy minerality grounds the experience.
- Finish: Long, complex, and evolving. The green, herbal spice lingers stubbornly on the tongue, slowly giving way to a warming, savory smokiness and a final, lasting impression of wet earth and wild herbs.
Serving Recommendation:
Due to its rarity and complexity, Dos Boots Tepeztate should be enjoyed neat in a traditional copita or a wide-mouthed glass. Allow it to breathe for a few minutes before sipping to unlock its decades-in-the-making aroma fully.

What is the difference between Tequila & Mezcal?
Tequila is a type of mezcal, much like how scotch and bourbon are types of whiskey.
Tequila and mezcal are both types of agave-based spirits that are popular in Mexico, but there are some key differences between the two. Tequila is made exclusively from the blue agave plant, which is primarily grown in the area surrounding the city of Tequila, about 40 miles northwest of Guadalajara. Mezcal, on the other hand, can be made from any type of agave plant, and is often made using traditional, labor-intensive methods.
One of the most noticeable differences between tequila and mezcal is their flavor. Tequila is typically smooth and subtle, with hints of fruit and spices, while mezcal has a more complex, smoky flavor that comes from the roasting of the agave hearts before they are fermented and distilled.
Another difference between the two spirits is their production process. Tequila is typically made using modern industrial methods, while mezcal is often produced using traditional techniques that have been passed down for generations. This can give mezcal a more authentic, artisanal character.
In general, tequila is considered to be a more refined and sophisticated spirit, while mezcal is often viewed as a more rustic and traditional drink. Both are popular in Mexico and are enjoyed around the world, so the best way to decide which one you like is to try them both and see which one suits your tastes.
