Dos Boots Madrecuishe Artesanal Mezcal

Agave: Madrecuishe (Agave karwinskii) | ABV: ~51.2% | Origin: Oaxaca, Mexico

Dos Boots Madrecuishe is a rare and distinct expression that captures the rugged spirit of the Oaxacan Sierra. Produced from the wild-growing Agave karwinskii—a tall, stalk-like agave known for its dense, fibrous piña—this mezcal offers a masterclass in structure and terroir. Reflecting the brand’s "Two Boots" philosophy (bridging the cultures of Mexico and the US, from hard work to fiesta), this bottling is traditionally crafted—often involving hand-milling with wooden mallets—to preserve the raw, intense character of the agave.

At a robust 51.2% ABV, it is a spirit for the serious enthusiast: complex, mineral-forward, and unapologetically authentic.

Tasting Notes

  • Nose: A vibrant collision of wet earth and fresh greenery. Expect immediate aromas of damp clay, freshly cut grass, and dried herbs (sage or thyme). As it opens, subtle floral undertones of white blossoms and a hint of unripe tropical fruit (green papaya or melon) emerge, grounded by a distinct minerality reminiscent of flint or slate.
  • Palate: Powerful and structural. The high proof delivers a warm intensity that carries flavors of green peppercorn, roasted peanut, and a sharp, vegetal brightness (green bean or aloe). The texture is often creamy despite the dryness, with a savory, almost salty quality that speaks to the wild soils where the agave thrived.
  • Finish: Long, dry, and clean. The finish lingers with notes of cedar, white pepper, and a lasting, stony minerality that leaves the palate refreshed and ready for the next sip.

Serving Recommendation

This is a sipping mezcal, best enjoyed neat in a wide-mouthed clay copita or crystal snifter to allow the high-proof vapors to dissipate and the aromas to bloom. It pairs exceptionally well with rich, fatty foods like mole negro, grilled ribeye, or dark chocolate, which cut through the spirit's mineral intensity.

What is the difference between Tequila & Mezcal?

Tequila is a type of mezcal, much like how scotch and bourbon are types of whiskey.

Tequila and mezcal are both types of agave-based spirits that are popular in Mexico, but there are some key differences between the two. Tequila is made exclusively from the blue agave plant, which is primarily grown in the area surrounding the city of Tequila, about 40 miles northwest of Guadalajara. Mezcal, on the other hand, can be made from any type of agave plant, and is often made using traditional, labor-intensive methods.

One of the most noticeable differences between tequila and mezcal is their flavor. Tequila is typically smooth and subtle, with hints of fruit and spices, while mezcal has a more complex, smoky flavor that comes from the roasting of the agave hearts before they are fermented and distilled.

Another difference between the two spirits is their production process. Tequila is typically made using modern industrial methods, while mezcal is often produced using traditional techniques that have been passed down for generations. This can give mezcal a more authentic, artisanal character.

In general, tequila is considered to be a more refined and sophisticated spirit, while mezcal is often viewed as a more rustic and traditional drink. Both are popular in Mexico and are enjoyed around the world, so the best way to decide which one you like is to try them both and see which one suits your tastes.
