Xavier Gerard Saint Joseph Lacombe-St. Pierre Northern Rhone Syrah

Unleash the Untamed Elegance of Saint-Joseph

Experience the inaugural release of a new chapter in Xavier Gerard's celebrated winemaking journey with the Saint Joseph Lacombe-St. Pierre Northern Rhone Syrah. This compelling 750ml bottling, boasting a 13.5% ABV, originates from a meticulously cultivated 1.8-hectare parcel in Lacombe, a revered lieu-dit within the Saint-Pierre de Boeuf commune. Acquired in 2020 and replanted with Syrah and Marsanne in its sandy granite soils, the 2023 vintage marks the exciting debut of this exceptional wine.

"Lacombe – St. Pierre" stands as a captivating counterpoint to Gerard's "Le Blanchard." While both express the purity of Northern Rhone Syrah, "Lacombe – St. Pierre" reveals a more rugged and wild personality, a testament to its unique terroir and youthful vines. It promises a truly immersive and thought-provoking exploration of Saint-Joseph's powerful yet elegant potential.

Tasting Notes:

  • Appearance: A deep, impenetrable ruby-purple, hinting at the wine's concentration and youthful vigor. Aroma: A captivating and complex bouquet immediately emerges, featuring a rich core of dark black fruits – think blackcurrant, blackberry, and dark plum. These are interwoven with distinct amarone-like spices and herbal notes, suggesting hints of licorice, wild herbs, and a touch of savory earthiness. A subtle whisper of graphite or crushed stone speaks to its granite origins.
  • Palate: The palate delivers on the promise of the aroma, offering a powerful yet structured experience. The black fruit core is robust and concentrated, but it is the rugged, yet refined tannins that define its character, providing a firm backbone that promises excellent aging potential. The amaro-like spices carry through, adding layers of intricate flavor and a savory depth. Despite its "wilder" personality, there is an undeniable vein of elegance that courses through the wine, a direct reflection of its sandy granite soils, ensuring a sophisticated and balanced profile.
  • Finish: Long, persistent, and evolving, leaving a lingering impression of dark fruit, spice, and a subtle mineral grip. The finish is remarkably dry and savory, inviting contemplation and another sip.

Key Features:

  • First Vintage Release (2023): A rare opportunity to experience a new expression from Xavier Gerard.
  • Single Lieu-Dit Syrah: This wine showcases the unique terroir of Lacombe in Saint-Pierre de Boeuf.
  • Northern Rhone Syrah: A classic representation of the region's bold and elegant style.

  • Food Pairing: An ideal companion for roasted lamb, grilled steak, game meats, or aged hard cheeses.

What is the difference between Tequila & Mezcal?

Tequila is a type of mezcal, much like how scotch and bourbon are types of whiskey.

Tequila and mezcal are both types of agave-based spirits that are popular in Mexico, but there are some key differences between the two. Tequila is made exclusively from the blue agave plant, which is primarily grown in the area surrounding the city of Tequila, about 40 miles northwest of Guadalajara. Mezcal, on the other hand, can be made from any type of agave plant, and is often made using traditional, labor-intensive methods.

One of the most noticeable differences between tequila and mezcal is their flavor. Tequila is typically smooth and subtle, with hints of fruit and spices, while mezcal has a more complex, smoky flavor that comes from the roasting of the agave hearts before they are fermented and distilled.

Another difference between the two spirits is their production process. Tequila is typically made using modern industrial methods, while mezcal is often produced using traditional techniques that have been passed down for generations. This can give mezcal a more authentic, artisanal character.

In general, tequila is considered to be a more refined and sophisticated spirit, while mezcal is often viewed as a more rustic and traditional drink. Both are popular in Mexico and are enjoyed around the world, so the best way to decide which one you like is to try them both and see which one suits your tastes.
