Viva Mexico Tahona Blanco Tequila (48% ABV)

The Agave Expression of the Highlands Celebrate the intersection of mastery and tradition with the Viva Mexico Tahona Blanco. This high-proof expression is a landmark release from NOM 1414, the famed Vivanco family distillery in Arandas, Jalisco. By reviving the time-honored volcanic stone tahona to crush the cooked agave, the master distillers create a rustic, high-oil tequila that captures the purest, most intense essence of the Highlands' mature blue Weber agave.

Bottled at a bold 48% ABV (96 Proof) to enhance its complex flavor and texture. The

Craftsmanship:

  • Agave: 100% Estate-Grown Blue Weber Agave from the Los Altos (Highlands) of Jalisco. Cooking: Slow-cooked in traditional brick ovens.
  • Milling: Crushed with a Volcanic Stone Tahona, an ancestral method that retains more agave fiber and rich natural oils.
  • Fermentation: Open-air fermentation in stainless steel tanks with proprietary yeast and the signature "Mozart Method" (classical music playing).
  • Distillation: Double-distilled in traditional copper pot stills.
  • Proof: Bottled at a robust 48% ABV for a fuller, more impactful flavor experience.

Tasting Notes:

  • Color: Crystal clear, brilliant.
  • Aroma: Powerful and complex, immediately showcasing sweet cooked agave interwoven with intense minerality and an earthy, vegetal quality. Secondary notes include freshly cut grass, bright citrus zest (lime and grapefruit peel), and a hint of spearmint and roasted pepper.
  • Palate: Bold and chewy with a viscous, oily mouthfeel that coats the palate. The flavor is a rustic expression of agave, with sweet cooked potato and green apple giving way to white pepper spice, a touch of olive brine, and wet, limestone earth. The higher proof provides structure without overwhelming heat, showcasing the agave's inherent sweetness.
  • Finish: Long, warm, and highly satisfying. It is characterized by a slow fade of the agave sweetness, a sustained mineral grit, and a lingering, pleasant peppery spice.

Experience:

This Tahona Blanco is a connoisseur's tequila, designed for those who want to taste the full, unadulterated character of the agave and the complexity of traditional production methods. It is a spectacular sipper that also has the power to elevate any cocktail.

What is the difference between Tequila & Mezcal?

Tequila is a type of mezcal, much like how scotch and bourbon are types of whiskey.

Tequila and mezcal are both types of agave-based spirits that are popular in Mexico, but there are some key differences between the two. Tequila is made exclusively from the blue agave plant, which is primarily grown in the area surrounding the city of Tequila, about 40 miles northwest of Guadalajara. Mezcal, on the other hand, can be made from any type of agave plant, and is often made using traditional, labor-intensive methods.

One of the most noticeable differences between tequila and mezcal is their flavor. Tequila is typically smooth and subtle, with hints of fruit and spices, while mezcal has a more complex, smoky flavor that comes from the roasting of the agave hearts before they are fermented and distilled.

Another difference between the two spirits is their production process. Tequila is typically made using modern industrial methods, while mezcal is often produced using traditional techniques that have been passed down for generations. This can give mezcal a more authentic, artisanal character.

In general, tequila is considered to be a more refined and sophisticated spirit, while mezcal is often viewed as a more rustic and traditional drink. Both are popular in Mexico and are enjoyed around the world, so the best way to decide which one you like is to try them both and see which one suits your tastes.
