Viva México Madera Tequila - Limited Edition Blanco (54% ABV)

A Powerful, Heritage-Inspired Expression from the Highlands of Jalisco

Experience the vibrant intensity of Viva Mexico Madera Tequila, a limited-edition, additive-free Blanco produced at the historic Destilería el Ranchito (NOM 1414) in Arandas, Los Altos, Jalisco. Under the direction of Maestro Tequilero Sergio Cruz, this expression represents a renewed focus on heritage methods, showcasing the bold flavors that result from traditional craftsmanship.

Madera ("wood" in Spanish) is a tribute to the long, eight-day, open-air fermentation conducted with the agave fibers in large, traditional 2,000-liter pine vats (tinas). This extended process, utilizing a proprietary propagated wild yeast alongside ambient yeasts from the surrounding fruit orchards (orange, lime, grapefruit, banana, and pomegranate), is enhanced by sonic harmonization (the "Mozart method"), creating a remarkably complex and massive flavor profile.

Crafted from 100% estate-grown Blue Weber agave, matured for 6–8 years and slow-roasted for 48–50 hours in brick ovens, this tequila is distilled twice in copper pot stills and bottled at a robust 54% ABV to capture the full intensity of the land, the air, and the agave.

Tasting Notes

  • Aroma: Powerful and complex. Dominant notes of fresh and cooked agave are quickly followed by bright citrus and layers of exotic tropical fruit like lychee and jackfruit. Underlying hints of dry grass and wood add depth.
  • Palate: Full-bodied and intense, delivering on the promise of the nose. The flavor is firmly anchored by sweet raw and cooked agave. This massive core is enveloped by bright and zesty citrus (lime, grapefruit) and a wave of lush tropical fruit that echoes the fermentation's influence. A distinct, long-lasting finish is warm and clean.
  • Finish: Long, warming, and clean. The high proof beautifully carries the powerful agave and fruit flavors, leaving behind a lingering sweetness and a final echo of citrus zest.

What is the difference between Tequila & Mezcal?

Tequila is a type of mezcal, much like how scotch and bourbon are types of whiskey.

Tequila and mezcal are both types of agave-based spirits that are popular in Mexico, but there are some key differences between the two. Tequila is made exclusively from the blue agave plant, which is primarily grown in the area surrounding the city of Tequila, about 40 miles northwest of Guadalajara. Mezcal, on the other hand, can be made from any type of agave plant, and is often made using traditional, labor-intensive methods.

One of the most noticeable differences between tequila and mezcal is their flavor. Tequila is typically smooth and subtle, with hints of fruit and spices, while mezcal has a more complex, smoky flavor that comes from the roasting of the agave hearts before they are fermented and distilled.

Another difference between the two spirits is their production process. Tequila is typically made using modern industrial methods, while mezcal is often produced using traditional techniques that have been passed down for generations. This can give mezcal a more authentic, artisanal character.

In general, tequila is considered to be a more refined and sophisticated spirit, while mezcal is often viewed as a more rustic and traditional drink. Both are popular in Mexico and are enjoyed around the world, so the best way to decide which one you like is to try them both and see which one suits your tastes.
