2023 Domaine Vincent Dauvissat Chablis Premier Cru "La Forest"

Chardonnay from Chablis, Burgundy, France

While it is often said that Domaine Roulot reigns supreme in Meursault or Raveneau excels in Montée de Tonnerre, Vincent Dauvissat is the undisputed king of the "La Forest" Premier Cru. Sourced from nearly 3.5 hectares spread across thirty small parcels, the domaine’s holdings feature unique, high-clay soils that impart a legendary richness and dramatic concentration to the wine.

The 2023 vintage is hailed as an absolute triumph for the estate. Striking a phenomenal balance between immense volume and razor-sharp, energetic tension, Dauvissat has captured a masterful snapshot of the vintage. This is a deeply serious, tightly coiled Premier Cru displaying grand cru structure, built to evolve effortlessly over decades in the cellar.

Critical Acclaim

  • 96 Points, Wine Advocate: "One of the greatest successes this year... Medium-bodied and tensile, laden with electric acidity, an abundance of chalky extract and concluding with a searingly saline finish, this is one of the finest wines of the vintage."
  • 95 Points, Decanter: "A wine of lovely richness, concentration and depth. Aromas range from lemon peel to passion fruit and hazelnut, and the silky, fine texture is still substantial enough to impress on the lingering finish."
  • 94 Points, Burghound: "This could be from nowhere other than Chablis... beautifully layering of various white orchard fruit, citrus zest and just shucked oysters... excellent volume and mid-palate concentration while preserving ample power."
  • 94 Points, Vinous: "The palate is the most enticing of Dauvissat's Premier Crus, more peppery and animated, building toward quite a powerful and long peacock's tail finish. Excellent."
  • 94 Points, John Gilman: "Deep, full bodied, racy and very precise, with great depth of pure fruit, superb mineral drive and grip, great balance and a very long, complex and vibrant finish... dazzling in quality this year!"

Tasting Notes

  • Nose: A deeply layered and aristocratic bouquet that shifts beautifully with air. It opens with striking notes of just-shucked oyster shells, iodine, and fresh lemon zest, evolving into riper aromas of white orchard fruit, tangerine, and dried white flowers. Hints of paraffin, a subtle touch of hazelnut, and a delicate kiss of smoky, vanillin oak round out the complex nose.
  • Palate: Texturally magnificent, deep, and remarkably full-bodied. The entry is concentrated and animated, delivering expansive waves of white peach, passion fruit, and lemon cream. An electric spine of taut, racy acidity cuts through the mid-palate weight, accompanied by a heavy dose of chalky extract and flinty minerals.
  • Finish: A towering, spectacular "peacock’s tail" finish. It builds with exceptional momentum, concluding with a searingly saline and smoky drive that vibrates on the palate with incredible grip and precision.

What is the difference between Tequila & Mezcal?

Tequila is a type of mezcal, much like how scotch and bourbon are types of whiskey.

Tequila and mezcal are both types of agave-based spirits that are popular in Mexico, but there are some key differences between the two. Tequila is made exclusively from the blue agave plant, which is primarily grown in the area surrounding the city of Tequila, about 40 miles northwest of Guadalajara. Mezcal, on the other hand, can be made from any type of agave plant, and is often made using traditional, labor-intensive methods.

One of the most noticeable differences between tequila and mezcal is their flavor. Tequila is typically smooth and subtle, with hints of fruit and spices, while mezcal has a more complex, smoky flavor that comes from the roasting of the agave hearts before they are fermented and distilled.

Another difference between the two spirits is their production process. Tequila is typically made using modern industrial methods, while mezcal is often produced using traditional techniques that have been passed down for generations. This can give mezcal a more authentic, artisanal character.

In general, tequila is considered to be a more refined and sophisticated spirit, while mezcal is often viewed as a more rustic and traditional drink. Both are popular in Mexico and are enjoyed around the world, so the best way to decide which one you like is to try them both and see which one suits your tastes.
