Uruapan Charanda Caña Criolla Ex-Cascahuin Tequila Cask Aged Rum
Embark on a unique sensory journey with Uruapan Charanda Caña Criolla Ex-Cascahuin Tequila Cask Aged Rum, a truly distinctive expression from the heart of Michoacán, Mexico.
Crafted by the esteemed Pacheco family at the Sol Tarasco distillery in Uruapan, this rum beautifully marries the rich heritage of Charanda production with an innovative aging approach. This exceptional spirit begins with 100% fresh-pressed juice from the Caña Criolla varietal, sugarcane cultivated at impressive elevations exceeding 4,000 feet above sea level. Following traditional methods, the sugarcane is milled using a water-powered mill, and the juice undergoes a minimum of 10 days of open-air fermentation, harnessing the power of wild ambient yeasts. Double-distilled in a 1,000-liter, wood-fired copper pot still, the resulting spirit then embarks on its transformative journey.
What sets this Charanda apart is its unique maturation in ex-Cascahuin tequila casks. This innovative aging process imparts remarkable additional layers of complexity, weaving new dimensions into the rum's inherent character.
Bottled at a robust 49% ABV, this rum offers a bold and complex profile that is both intriguing and remarkably refined.
Tasting Notes:
- Aroma: The nose offers a captivating interplay of the rum's tropical and earthy origins, now beautifully intertwined with the influence of its tequila cask aging. Expect a subtle yet distinct presence of agave, nuanced by hints of oak and a delicate whisper of spice. Underlying these new complexities, the rum's signature tropical fruit and earthy notes remain.
- Palate: The palate is rich and multifaceted, showcasing the seamless integration of rum and tequila cask characteristics. The dry, mineral beautifully complements the inherent sweetness and fruitiness of the Caña Criolla, and subtly peppery notes are imparted by the tequila barrels. Hints of vanilla and caramel from the oak mingle with a gentle warmth.
- Finish: The finish is long, elegant, and exceptionally unique. The lingering notes of cooked agave, tropical fruit, and a delicate spice provide a memorable and inviting conclusion, prompting contemplation of this truly innovative spirit.
- Enjoyment: This remarkably complex rum is an exceptional choice for sipping neat, allowing its intricate layers to unfold with each taste. It also serves as a fascinating and sophisticated component for craft cocktails, where its distinctive profile can elevate and redefine classic recipes.

What is the difference between Tequila & Mezcal?
Tequila is a type of mezcal, much like how scotch and bourbon are types of whiskey.
Tequila and mezcal are both types of agave-based spirits that are popular in Mexico, but there are some key differences between the two. Tequila is made exclusively from the blue agave plant, which is primarily grown in the area surrounding the city of Tequila, about 40 miles northwest of Guadalajara. Mezcal, on the other hand, can be made from any type of agave plant, and is often made using traditional, labor-intensive methods.
One of the most noticeable differences between tequila and mezcal is their flavor. Tequila is typically smooth and subtle, with hints of fruit and spices, while mezcal has a more complex, smoky flavor that comes from the roasting of the agave hearts before they are fermented and distilled.
Another difference between the two spirits is their production process. Tequila is typically made using modern industrial methods, while mezcal is often produced using traditional techniques that have been passed down for generations. This can give mezcal a more authentic, artisanal character.
In general, tequila is considered to be a more refined and sophisticated spirit, while mezcal is often viewed as a more rustic and traditional drink. Both are popular in Mexico and are enjoyed around the world, so the best way to decide which one you like is to try them both and see which one suits your tastes.
