Tesoro Azul Reposado: The Harmony of Music and Earth

Tesoro Azul Reposado is a premium expression co-owned and championed by the legendary Mexican singer-songwriter Marco Antonio Solís. Much like his music, this tequila is designed to evoke deep emotion and cultural pride. Produced at the renowned Productos Finos de Agave (NOM 1416) in Jesús María, Jalisco, it represents a sophisticated partnership between artistic vision and traditional highland distilling expertise.

Crafted from 100% blue Weber agave grown in the Los Altos region, Tesoro Azul undergoes a meticulous, slow-cooking process in traditional brick ovens to achieve a deep, honeyed complexity, then rests in white American oak barrels.

Tasting Notes

  • Appearance: A bright, golden amber with brilliant clarity and a rich, oily body that coats the glass.
  • Aroma: An inviting and complex bouquet. It opens with the scent of sweet caramelized agave and vanilla, followed by elegant layers of cherry, red fruits, and a touch of toasted almond. Subtle notes of chocolate and cinnamon emerge as it breathes.
  • Palate: The mouthfeel is exceptionally silky and smooth. It features a unique flavor profile in which the agave is complemented by rich notes of burnt honey, yams, and dark chocolate. The oak influence is well-integrated, providing structure without overwhelming the spirit’s natural brightness.
  • Finish: Long, warm, and sweet. It leaves a lingering essence of vanilla and light oak, with a soft agave-laced final note.

Production Highlights

  • Slow-Cooked Heritage: The agave is cooked in brick ovens for a total of 72 hours, 24 hours with direct steam and another 48 hours with residual heat, to develop its signature depth.
  • Proprietary Fermentation: The distillery uses its own unique yeast strain, specifically designed to thrive in the environmental conditions of the Jesús María facility.
  • Highland Elegance: Sourced from the highlands, the agave provides a naturally fruitier and more floral profile compared to valley-grown varieties.
  • Artisanal Bottling: Reflecting Solís's commitment to his community, the labeling and packaging are primarily handled by local women, maintaining an artisanal essence throughout the final presentation.

What is the difference between Tequila & Mezcal?

Tequila is a type of mezcal, much like how scotch and bourbon are types of whiskey.

Tequila and mezcal are both types of agave-based spirits that are popular in Mexico, but there are some key differences between the two. Tequila is made exclusively from the blue agave plant, which is primarily grown in the area surrounding the city of Tequila, about 40 miles northwest of Guadalajara. Mezcal, on the other hand, can be made from any type of agave plant, and is often made using traditional, labor-intensive methods.

One of the most noticeable differences between tequila and mezcal is their flavor. Tequila is typically smooth and subtle, with hints of fruit and spices, while mezcal has a more complex, smoky flavor that comes from the roasting of the agave hearts before they are fermented and distilled.

Another difference between the two spirits is their production process. Tequila is typically made using modern industrial methods, while mezcal is often produced using traditional techniques that have been passed down for generations. This can give mezcal a more authentic, artisanal character.

In general, tequila is considered to be a more refined and sophisticated spirit, while mezcal is often viewed as a more rustic and traditional drink. Both are popular in Mexico and are enjoyed around the world, so the best way to decide which one you like is to try them both and see which one suits your tastes.
