Terra Mädi Tempranillo - A Mexican Expression of a Classic Grape
From the heart of central Mexico, at Freixenet Mexico's Finca Sala Vivé in Querétaro, comes Terra Mädi Tempranillo. Following the "Beloved Earth" philosophy – a fusion of European winemaking and Mexican terroir – this RED WINE showcases the vibrant character of the Tempranillo grape, thoughtfully crafted to express its unique regional identity.
Tasting Notes:
- This Tempranillo displays a bright garnet red color with alluring ruby hues, hinting at its youthful vibrancy and good density.
- The nose offers a captivating fruity and floral aromatic intensity. Delight in the evocative aromas of ripe red fruits and juicy plums, layered with intriguing notes of tobacco and delicate red flowers, particularly cherries. A subtle influence from its oak aging emerges as hints of warm vanilla and sweet coconut.
- On the palate, this is an elegant wine with a lively acidity, a hallmark of the region's terroir. The tannins are velvety and smooth, providing a pleasant texture that lingers into a satisfying aftertaste.
Pairings:
Terra Mädi Tempranillo is a versatile food companion.
- Enjoy it with soft cheeses to highlight its fruit-forward character, pair it with smoky BBQ ribs for a delightful contrast, or savor it alongside comforting pasta dishes with rich red sauce.
- Serve slightly chilled between 50 to 60 degrees Fahrenheit to best appreciate its aromatic complexity and balanced structure.
Vinification & Aging Highlights:
- The Tempranillo grapes are carefully manually selected and destemmed.
- A cold maceration at 6°C for four days gently extracts color and aromas before a controlled fermentation at 25°C with regular pumping over for ten days.
- The wine then undergoes a thoughtful aging process, spending 2 months in a combination of American and French oak barrels followed by 8 months of bottle aging, allowing the flavors to integrate and the tannins to soften.

What is the difference between Tequila & Mezcal?
Tequila is a type of mezcal, much like how scotch and bourbon are types of whiskey.
Tequila and mezcal are both types of agave-based spirits that are popular in Mexico, but there are some key differences between the two. Tequila is made exclusively from the blue agave plant, which is primarily grown in the area surrounding the city of Tequila, about 40 miles northwest of Guadalajara. Mezcal, on the other hand, can be made from any type of agave plant, and is often made using traditional, labor-intensive methods.
One of the most noticeable differences between tequila and mezcal is their flavor. Tequila is typically smooth and subtle, with hints of fruit and spices, while mezcal has a more complex, smoky flavor that comes from the roasting of the agave hearts before they are fermented and distilled.
Another difference between the two spirits is their production process. Tequila is typically made using modern industrial methods, while mezcal is often produced using traditional techniques that have been passed down for generations. This can give mezcal a more authentic, artisanal character.
In general, tequila is considered to be a more refined and sophisticated spirit, while mezcal is often viewed as a more rustic and traditional drink. Both are popular in Mexico and are enjoyed around the world, so the best way to decide which one you like is to try them both and see which one suits your tastes.
