The Agave Aficionado's Pair: A Study in Reposado Excellence

This curated duo brings together two titans of the Tequila Valley, offering a side-by-side exploration of the Reposado category. Featuring the rustic, old-world soul of Fortaleza and the refined, single-cask precision of El Tequileño, this pair is a masterclass in additive-free craftsmanship.

Fortaleza Reposado

The Benchmark of Tradition | 40% ABV

Produced at Destilería Los Abuelos (NOM 1493), Fortaleza is the gold standard for those who value heritage. Every step is a labor of love: the agave is slow-cooked in stone ovens, crushed by a two-ton tahona wheel, and fermented in open-air wooden vats before being distilled in small copper pots.

Tasting Notes:

  • Aroma: Deeply aromatic with notes of cooked agave, citrus peel, and a distinct "petrichor" earthiness.
  • Palate: A rich, oily mouthfeel that carries flavors of butter, vanilla, and sage. There is a beautiful balance between the sweetness of the agave and the subtle influence of the oak.
  • Finish: Long and warming, with a lingering hint of black pepper and toasted nuts.

El Tequileño Single Barrel Reposado

The Art of the Cask | 40.5% ABV

While Fortaleza honors the past, El Tequileño (NOM 1108) represents the pinnacle of modern technical mastery. This "Gran Reserva" expression is aged for eight months in hand-selected American Oak. Because it is a single-barrel bottling, it captures the unique, unrepeatable character of one specific cask, offering a level of nuance and elegance rarely found in blended batches.

Tasting Notes:

  • Aroma: Bright and sophisticated. Expect scents of sweet agave nectar, light cinnamon, and a floral top note reminiscent of orange blossom.
  • Palate: A cleaner, more precise profile than its counterpart. It features layers of butterscotch, dried fruit, and a delicate touch of oak spice that never overpowers the agave.
  • Finish: Exceptionally smooth and dry, with a refined snap of ginger and light caramel.

Why Experience Them Together?

This pair highlights the incredible spectrum of the "Rested" category. While both share the same volcanic terroir of the Lowlands and a commitment to zero additives, their production styles offer a fascinating contrast:

  • The Texture: Compare the heavy, rustic body of the tahona-crushed Fortaleza against the bright, elegant clarity of El Tequileño.
  • The Oak: Observe how American Oak interacts with two different fermentation styles, one focused on earthy complexity and the other on crisp, agave-forward precision.
  • The Pedigree: Both distilleries are legendary icons in Tequila, making this the ultimate gift for a serious collector or a definitive flight for your next tasting.

What is the difference between Tequila & Mezcal?

Tequila is a type of mezcal, much like how scotch and bourbon are types of whiskey.

Tequila and mezcal are both types of agave-based spirits that are popular in Mexico, but there are some key differences between the two. Tequila is made exclusively from the blue agave plant, which is primarily grown in the area surrounding the city of Tequila, about 40 miles northwest of Guadalajara. Mezcal, on the other hand, can be made from any type of agave plant, and is often made using traditional, labor-intensive methods.

One of the most noticeable differences between tequila and mezcal is their flavor. Tequila is typically smooth and subtle, with hints of fruit and spices, while mezcal has a more complex, smoky flavor that comes from the roasting of the agave hearts before they are fermented and distilled.

Another difference between the two spirits is their production process. Tequila is typically made using modern industrial methods, while mezcal is often produced using traditional techniques that have been passed down for generations. This can give mezcal a more authentic, artisanal character.

In general, tequila is considered to be a more refined and sophisticated spirit, while mezcal is often viewed as a more rustic and traditional drink. Both are popular in Mexico and are enjoyed around the world, so the best way to decide which one you like is to try them both and see which one suits your tastes.
