Tepanal Ancestral Mexicano

A Rare Expression of Wilderness and Heritage

In the rugged landscapes of Santa María Sola de Vega, the Mexicano agave (Agave rhodacantha) stands tall, known for producing mezcals of immense elegance and structural balance. Master distiller Rafael "Rafa" Garcia Aragon applies his ancestral expertise to this majestic plant, creating a spirit that honors the 16th-century legacy of Tepanaltepec, the "hill of honeycombs."

As a first-generation maestro mezcalero, Rafa is a guardian of tradition. By using clay pot distillation and fermenting in Montezuma Cypress "canoes," he ensures that every drop of Tepanal Ancestral Mexicano reflects the authentic history of his community and the raw, untamed beauty of the Oaxacan wild.

Tasting Notes

  • Aroma: A complex and inviting bouquet that balances savory and sweet. Notes of damp river stone and roasted green chiles are lifted by high tones of lemongrass and a delicate hint of wild honey.
  • Palate: The entry is smooth and oily, characteristic of the Mexicano variety. Mid-palate flavors reveal a beautiful tension between herbal freshness—think mint and sage—and the deep, caramelized richness of agave hearts cooked in a stone pit.
  • Finish: Long, sophisticated, and remarkably clean. The "Ancestral" clay pot process leaves a velvety, mineral texture on the tongue, finishing with a final flourish of citrus zest and soft wood smoke.

The Ancestral Difference

Unlike modern industrial mezcals, Tepanal's Mexicano is produced without copper or stainless steel. The use of clay pots during distillation imparts a unique "stony" soul to the spirit, rounding out the bold spice of the Mexicano agave and creating a harmony of flavors that has remained unchanged for centuries.

Heritage Note:

The Mexicano agave can take up to 15 years to reach maturity. This bottle represents over a decade of growth and months of meticulous hand-craftsmanship in the spirit of the ancient residents of Tepanaltepec.

What is the difference between Tequila & Mezcal?

Tequila is a type of mezcal, much like how scotch and bourbon are types of whiskey.

Tequila and mezcal are both types of agave-based spirits that are popular in Mexico, but there are some key differences between the two. Tequila is made exclusively from the blue agave plant, which is primarily grown in the area surrounding the city of Tequila, about 40 miles northwest of Guadalajara. Mezcal, on the other hand, can be made from any type of agave plant, and is often made using traditional, labor-intensive methods.

One of the most noticeable differences between tequila and mezcal is their flavor. Tequila is typically smooth and subtle, with hints of fruit and spices, while mezcal has a more complex, smoky flavor that comes from the roasting of the agave hearts before they are fermented and distilled.

Another difference between the two spirits is their production process. Tequila is typically made using modern industrial methods, while mezcal is often produced using traditional techniques that have been passed down for generations. This can give mezcal a more authentic, artisanal character.

In general, tequila is considered to be a more refined and sophisticated spirit, while mezcal is often viewed as a more rustic and traditional drink. Both are popular in Mexico and are enjoyed around the world, so the best way to decide which one you like is to try them both and see which one suits your tastes.
