Tepanal Ancestral Arroqueño

The King of Agaves, Crafted by Hand and Clay

From the hands of master distiller Rafael "Rafa" Garcia Aragon comes this rare expression of Arroqueño, a massive agave variety known for its complexity and long maturation. Part of an incredibly limited run of only 132 bottles, this mezcal is a masterclass in the Ancestral method.

True to the name Tepanal, referencing the "hill of honeycombs" of old Santa Maria Sola, this spirit is a labor of love. Every step of the process honors 16th-century traditions: from the hand-carved Montezuma Cypress (Sabino) fermentation canoes to the slow, meticulous double distillation in clay pots. Distilled in September 2021, this batch captures the specific terroir of the Oaxacan spring water and wild yeasts unique to Rafa’s distillery.

Tasting Notes

  • Aroma: Deep and savory. It opens with rich notes of roasted cocoa and damp forest floor, followed by an elegant perfume of dried herbs, cantaloupe, and a hint of dark chocolate.
  • Palate: Powerful yet remarkably smooth at 50% ABV. The clay pot distillation provides a heavy, creamy texture. You’ll find flavors of cooked agave sweetness, cinnamon, and a distinct vegetal backbone typical of the Arroqueño variety.
  • Finish: An enduring, complex finish. The "Ancestral" signature is clear here—expect a dry, mineral snap accompanied by a lingering, spicy warmth and a touch of tropical fruit.

A Collector’s Note:

With only 99 liters produced in this entire lot, this Arroqueño represents the pinnacle of Rafa’s commitment to the heritage of Tepanaltepec. It is a bold, high-proof spirit designed for slow sipping and contemplation.

What is the difference between Tequila & Mezcal?

Tequila is a type of mezcal, much like how scotch and bourbon are types of whiskey.

Tequila and mezcal are both types of agave-based spirits that are popular in Mexico, but there are some key differences between the two. Tequila is made exclusively from the blue agave plant, which is primarily grown in the area surrounding the city of Tequila, about 40 miles northwest of Guadalajara. Mezcal, on the other hand, can be made from any type of agave plant, and is often made using traditional, labor-intensive methods.

One of the most noticeable differences between tequila and mezcal is their flavor. Tequila is typically smooth and subtle, with hints of fruit and spices, while mezcal has a more complex, smoky flavor that comes from the roasting of the agave hearts before they are fermented and distilled.

Another difference between the two spirits is their production process. Tequila is typically made using modern industrial methods, while mezcal is often produced using traditional techniques that have been passed down for generations. This can give mezcal a more authentic, artisanal character.

In general, tequila is considered to be a more refined and sophisticated spirit, while mezcal is often viewed as a more rustic and traditional drink. Both are popular in Mexico and are enjoyed around the world, so the best way to decide which one you like is to try them both and see which one suits your tastes.
