Sierra Norte Mexican Purple Corn Whiskey:
The Spirit of Oaxaca’s High Forests
Step into the world of ancestral grains with Sierra Norte Purple Corn Whiskey. While most whiskies lean on the familiarity of yellow corn, this expression celebrates the rich biodiversity of Oaxaca, Mexico.
Crafted from non-GMO, heritage purple corn, a grain with deep cultural roots in the region, this whiskey offers a flavor profile that is as vibrant and regal as its namesake. Double-distilled in traditional copper pot stills and aged in toasted French Oak, Sierra Norte Purple Corn is a testament to the "Crop-to-Glass" movement. It is a whiskey that doesn't just taste of wood and time, but of the specific, colorful earth from which its grain was harvested.
The Heritage
Ancestral Corn: Part of a project to preserve the genetic diversity of Oaxacan corn, which has been cultivated by indigenous communities for millennia.
French Oak Aging: Rested for approximately two years in French Oak. Unlike American oak, French barrels provide a soft, silken texture and subtle spice that allows the unique corn character to shine. Master
Craftsmanship: Created by Master Distiller Douglas French, who marries traditional whiskey techniques with the soul of Mexican agriculture.
Tasting Notes
- Appearance: A bright, golden honey hue with exceptional clarity.
- Nose: Intensely floral and sweet. Initial notes of red berries and grape skin are followed by the comforting scent of fresh-baked corn muffins and a light, herbal grassiness.
- Palate: A beautifully balanced mouthfeel. The purple corn imparts a distinct fruit-forward sweetness, think plum and dark cherry, balanced by savory notes of toasted nuts, butterscotch, and a hint of white pepper. Finish: Clean and uplifting. The fruit notes linger, eventually giving way to a dry, elegant finish of soft oak tannin and a touch of dried apricot.

What is the difference between Tequila & Mezcal?
Tequila is a type of mezcal, much like how scotch and bourbon are types of whiskey.
Tequila and mezcal are both types of agave-based spirits that are popular in Mexico, but there are some key differences between the two. Tequila is made exclusively from the blue agave plant, which is primarily grown in the area surrounding the city of Tequila, about 40 miles northwest of Guadalajara. Mezcal, on the other hand, can be made from any type of agave plant, and is often made using traditional, labor-intensive methods.
One of the most noticeable differences between tequila and mezcal is their flavor. Tequila is typically smooth and subtle, with hints of fruit and spices, while mezcal has a more complex, smoky flavor that comes from the roasting of the agave hearts before they are fermented and distilled.
Another difference between the two spirits is their production process. Tequila is typically made using modern industrial methods, while mezcal is often produced using traditional techniques that have been passed down for generations. This can give mezcal a more authentic, artisanal character.
In general, tequila is considered to be a more refined and sophisticated spirit, while mezcal is often viewed as a more rustic and traditional drink. Both are popular in Mexico and are enjoyed around the world, so the best way to decide which one you like is to try them both and see which one suits your tastes.
