Sierra Norte Mexican Black Corn Whiskey:
An Ancient Legacy, Reimagined
Experience a whiskey unlike any other in the world. Sierra Norte Black Corn is a groundbreaking spirit born from the high-altitude forests of Oaxaca, Mexico. While traditional whiskies rely on industrial grains, Sierra Norte celebrates biodiversity by using ancestral, non-GMO black corn, a heritage crop cultivated by indigenous farmers for over 7,000 years.
Distilled in the heart of Oaxaca by Master Distiller Douglas French, this single-barrel expression is a masterclass in "grain-forward" distilling. By utilizing the natural, intense sugars of black corn, Sierra Norte creates a profile that is deep, earthy, and remarkably smooth.
The Craft
Heritage Grain: A mash bill of 85% native Oaxacan Black Corn and 15% malted barley. Artisanal Distillation: Double-distilled in traditional copper pot stills to preserve the delicate essential oils of the corn.
French Oak Aging: Matured for approximately two years in toasted French Oak barrels, which impart a refined elegance quite different from the aggressive char of American bourbon.
Social Impact: Proudly supporting local Oaxacan farmers and maintaining a distillery team that is nearly 90% women, providing vital economic stability to the region.
Tasting Notes
- Color: A warm, polished amber with copper reflections. Nose: Deep and intriguing. Aromas of banana peel and dusty earth are layered with sweet maraschino cherry, hints of vanilla, and a savory, "mezcal-adjacent" funk.
- Palate: Rich and incredibly creamy. The sweetness of the black corn takes center stage, reminiscent of corn fritters and gingerbread, followed by light mandarin orange and salted caramel.
- Finish: Long and warming. It leaves a lasting impression of roasted corn kernels, root ginger, and a subtle touch of peppery French oak spice.

What is the difference between Tequila & Mezcal?
Tequila is a type of mezcal, much like how scotch and bourbon are types of whiskey.
Tequila and mezcal are both types of agave-based spirits that are popular in Mexico, but there are some key differences between the two. Tequila is made exclusively from the blue agave plant, which is primarily grown in the area surrounding the city of Tequila, about 40 miles northwest of Guadalajara. Mezcal, on the other hand, can be made from any type of agave plant, and is often made using traditional, labor-intensive methods.
One of the most noticeable differences between tequila and mezcal is their flavor. Tequila is typically smooth and subtle, with hints of fruit and spices, while mezcal has a more complex, smoky flavor that comes from the roasting of the agave hearts before they are fermented and distilled.
Another difference between the two spirits is their production process. Tequila is typically made using modern industrial methods, while mezcal is often produced using traditional techniques that have been passed down for generations. This can give mezcal a more authentic, artisanal character.
In general, tequila is considered to be a more refined and sophisticated spirit, while mezcal is often viewed as a more rustic and traditional drink. Both are popular in Mexico and are enjoyed around the world, so the best way to decide which one you like is to try them both and see which one suits your tastes.
