The Rums of Mexico: Toquecito (Pedro Andrés + Jorge Nájera)

The Rums of Mexico: Toquecito (Pedro Andrés + Jorge Nájera) is an extraordinary high-proof expression that serves as the spiritual successor to the iconic Melaza con Muck. Bottled at a robust 51.1% ABV, this limited three-barrel blend highlights complex pot still distillations crafted using traditional Mexican dunder and muck techniques, elevated by a subtle touch (un toquecito) of intentional maturation.

The blend brings together two distinct components: two barrels of pot still dunder rum aged for two years in ex-bourbon casks and then rested for 11 months in open-top glass demijohns, along with a third barrel of pot still rum distilled with young muck and aged for five months in an American oak ex-rum cask. The result is a vibrant, funky, and beautifully structured rum that bridges raw agricultural funk with refined wood character.

Tasting Notes

  • Appearance: Warm golden amber with bright copper reflections and heavy, clinging legs along the glass.
  • Aroma: Bold, tropical, and delightfully complex. Prominent aromas of grilled pineapple and vibrant cherry slushee lead the way, underpinned by an intriguing, ester-rich hint of carpenter's glue and dark cherry skin.
  • Palate: A balanced intensity coats the tongue with a dense, oily weight. Rich notes of crystallized brown sugar and creamy almond butter merge with tart cherry slushie and the rich, caramelized depth of over-baked pineapple upside-down cake. A persistent, comforting warmth builds across the mid-palate.
  • Finish: Long, warming, and well-structured. The rich sweetness tapers off gracefully into a slightly dry finish accented by a crisp, refreshing hint of menthol.

Serving Recommendations

  • Neat: Enjoy neat in a Glencairn or copita glass to appreciate the full intensity of the dunder funk and complex barrel interactions.
  • With Water: A few drops of room-temperature water soften the 51.1% ABV, lifting the sweet tropical fruit and nut butter notes while opening up the ester profile.
  • Cocktails: A powerful foundation for high-proof rum cocktails, making a standout Ti' Punch, Jungle Bird, or an adventurous twist on a classic Mai Tai.

What is the difference between Tequila & Mezcal?

Tequila is a type of mezcal, much like how scotch and bourbon are types of whiskey.

Tequila and mezcal are both types of agave-based spirits that are popular in Mexico, but there are some key differences between the two. Tequila is made exclusively from the blue agave plant, which is primarily grown in the area surrounding the city of Tequila, about 40 miles northwest of Guadalajara. Mezcal, on the other hand, can be made from any type of agave plant, and is often made using traditional, labor-intensive methods.

One of the most noticeable differences between tequila and mezcal is their flavor. Tequila is typically smooth and subtle, with hints of fruit and spices, while mezcal has a more complex, smoky flavor that comes from the roasting of the agave hearts before they are fermented and distilled.

Another difference between the two spirits is their production process. Tequila is typically made using modern industrial methods, while mezcal is often produced using traditional techniques that have been passed down for generations. This can give mezcal a more authentic, artisanal character.

In general, tequila is considered to be a more refined and sophisticated spirit, while mezcal is often viewed as a more rustic and traditional drink. Both are popular in Mexico and are enjoyed around the world, so the best way to decide which one you like is to try them both and see which one suits your tastes.
