Rezpiral Series 9: Berta Vasquez — Mexicano Agave Spirit

This standout release from Rezpiral Series 9 showcases the exceptional talent of Maestra Mezcalera Berta Vasquez, crafting out of her palenque in San Baltazar Chichicapam, Oaxaca. Renowned for her impeccable instinct and generational mastery, Berta brings her signature touch to one of the most coveted wild agaves of the region: Mexicano (Agave rhodacantha).

Wild Mexicano agaves grow under the shade of large trees in rich, high-altitude forest soils, absorbing complex environmental characteristics over their lengthy 10 to 15-year maturation. Because of its large size and high moisture content, fermenting Mexicano requires a precise hand to capture its delicate, elegant nature. Following traditional, zero-additive methods, Berta roasts the mature piñas in an underground stone pit, crushes them with a traditional stone tahona, allows the mash to ferment naturally with ambient wild yeasts in oak vats, and double-distills the liquid in a copper alembic still. This small-batch spirit is an incredible testament to biodiversity and artisanal preservation.

Tasting Notes

  • Nose: Elegant, expansive, and deeply floral. It opens with a beautiful bouquet of wild wildflowers, lavender, and sweet cream, grounded by an underlying freshness of crisp green apple, river stones, and a soft, integrated woodsmoke.
  • Palate: Remarkably silky and layered. The entry is bright and subtly sweet, offering notes of cooked agave, vanilla bean, and ripe melon. It quickly transitions into a savory mid-palate featuring baking spices, fresh tobacco leaf, and an earthy, clay-like minerality.
  • Finish: Long, balanced, and incredibly clean. A gentle wave of white pepper and spearmint fades slowly, leaving a lingering, memory-evoking trail of sweet smoke, cedar, and crisp salinity.

The Rezpiral Ethos:

More than an independent bottler, Rezpiral is a social enterprise dedicated to supporting autonomous spirit makers. By practicing fair-trade commerce and reinvesting directly into community-led agave nursery projects, Rezpiral helps Maestros like Berta Vasquez protect their land, their culture, and their liquid art for generations to come.

What is the difference between Tequila & Mezcal?

Tequila is a type of mezcal, much like how scotch and bourbon are types of whiskey.

Tequila and mezcal are both types of agave-based spirits that are popular in Mexico, but there are some key differences between the two. Tequila is made exclusively from the blue agave plant, which is primarily grown in the area surrounding the city of Tequila, about 40 miles northwest of Guadalajara. Mezcal, on the other hand, can be made from any type of agave plant, and is often made using traditional, labor-intensive methods.

One of the most noticeable differences between tequila and mezcal is their flavor. Tequila is typically smooth and subtle, with hints of fruit and spices, while mezcal has a more complex, smoky flavor that comes from the roasting of the agave hearts before they are fermented and distilled.

Another difference between the two spirits is their production process. Tequila is typically made using modern industrial methods, while mezcal is often produced using traditional techniques that have been passed down for generations. This can give mezcal a more authentic, artisanal character.

In general, tequila is considered to be a more refined and sophisticated spirit, while mezcal is often viewed as a more rustic and traditional drink. Both are popular in Mexico and are enjoyed around the world, so the best way to decide which one you like is to try them both and see which one suits your tastes.
