Rezpiral Series 9: Berta Vasquez — Castilla Agave Spirit
Rezpiral’s Series 9 features an exceptional batch from one of Oaxaca’s most revered master artisans, Maestra Mezcalera Berta Vasquez. Operating out of San Baltazar Chichicapam, Berta is celebrated for her profound intuitive knowledge of agave, handcrafting small-batch spirits that capture the rugged beauty and complex terroir of her environment.
This specific release is distilled from 100% wild Castilla (Agave angustifolia), a genetically distinct relative of Espadín that grows in sparse, isolated pockets of the Oaxacan highlands. Known for being notoriously difficult to harvest and requiring meticulous care during fermentation, wild Castilla yields a deeply nuanced, hyper-traditional spirit. Following Rezpiral's commitment to hyper-limited, fair-trade bottling, this batch was roasted in a traditional underground conical stone oven, crushed by a horse-drawn tahona wheel, naturally fermented with wild yeasts in pine vats, and twice-distilled in a classic copper alembic still. The result is a brilliant, unaged canvas showing the purest intersection of wild maguey and generational mastery.
Tasting Notes
- Nose: Strikingly complex and aromatic. It opens with bright lemongrass, lime peel, and green bell pepper, quickly shifting into a deeper, rustic core of damp earth, woodsmoke, and a distinct chalky minerality.
- Palate: Crisp yet beautifully textured. Up front, you get vibrant herbal flavors of mint and sage balanced by sweet roasted agave. As it develops on the palate, rich undertones of bitter cacao, pink peppercorn, and a subtle salinity emerge.
- Finish: Long, dry, and distinctly flinty. The smoke dissolves gracefully into a clean, lingering finish of wet stone, fresh herbs, and a soft, warming citrus oils accent.
About Rezpiral:

What is the difference between Tequila & Mezcal?
Tequila is a type of mezcal, much like how scotch and bourbon are types of whiskey.
Tequila and mezcal are both types of agave-based spirits that are popular in Mexico, but there are some key differences between the two. Tequila is made exclusively from the blue agave plant, which is primarily grown in the area surrounding the city of Tequila, about 40 miles northwest of Guadalajara. Mezcal, on the other hand, can be made from any type of agave plant, and is often made using traditional, labor-intensive methods.
One of the most noticeable differences between tequila and mezcal is their flavor. Tequila is typically smooth and subtle, with hints of fruit and spices, while mezcal has a more complex, smoky flavor that comes from the roasting of the agave hearts before they are fermented and distilled.
Another difference between the two spirits is their production process. Tequila is typically made using modern industrial methods, while mezcal is often produced using traditional techniques that have been passed down for generations. This can give mezcal a more authentic, artisanal character.
In general, tequila is considered to be a more refined and sophisticated spirit, while mezcal is often viewed as a more rustic and traditional drink. Both are popular in Mexico and are enjoyed around the world, so the best way to decide which one you like is to try them both and see which one suits your tastes.
