Rezpiral Series 9: Berta Vasquez — Arroqueño Agave Spirit
From the highly anticipated Series 9 comes a monumental release from Maestra Mezcalera Berta Vasquez, handcrafted in the historic distilling enclave of San Baltazar Chichicapam, Oaxaca. For this expression, Berta has harnessed the power of Arroqueño (Agave americana), a legendary, majestic giant among wild magueys that takes anywhere from 15 to 20 years to mature in the rugged Oaxacan highlands.
Because of its massive size and immense sugar content, Arroqueño demands an expert level of patience and skill to ferment and distill without losing its delicate, wild characteristics. Berta coaxes the absolute best out of this ancient plant using entirely traditional, ancestral methods: roasting the massive piñas in an earthen pit oven, crushing them with a horse-drawn stone tahona, initiating a slow, natural fermentation with wild yeasts in open wooden vats, and double-distilling in a copper alembic still. The result is a profoundly deep, complex spirit that carries two decades of terroir in every drop.
Tasting Notes
- Nose: Rich, heavy, and incredibly expressive. It leads with dense aromas of dark roasted agave, wet clay, and rich vegetable broth, which gently open up to reveal brighter notes of tropical fruit (ripe mango and papaya), leather, and an elegant, damp forest floor smoke.
- Palate: Full-bodied, viscous, and deeply savory. The mouthfeel is incredibly coating, greeting the palate with an intricate blend of dark chocolate, roasted coffee beans, and green herbs like epazote and cilantro. A distinct, savory salinity runs through the mid-palate, balanced by a deep, molasses-like sweetness.
- Finish: Spectacularly long, complex, and evolving. The earthy and savory elements slowly give way to a sweet, lingering note of anise, charred oak, and a crisp, flinty mineral finish that stays with you for minutes. The

What is the difference between Tequila & Mezcal?
Tequila is a type of mezcal, much like how scotch and bourbon are types of whiskey.
Tequila and mezcal are both types of agave-based spirits that are popular in Mexico, but there are some key differences between the two. Tequila is made exclusively from the blue agave plant, which is primarily grown in the area surrounding the city of Tequila, about 40 miles northwest of Guadalajara. Mezcal, on the other hand, can be made from any type of agave plant, and is often made using traditional, labor-intensive methods.
One of the most noticeable differences between tequila and mezcal is their flavor. Tequila is typically smooth and subtle, with hints of fruit and spices, while mezcal has a more complex, smoky flavor that comes from the roasting of the agave hearts before they are fermented and distilled.
Another difference between the two spirits is their production process. Tequila is typically made using modern industrial methods, while mezcal is often produced using traditional techniques that have been passed down for generations. This can give mezcal a more authentic, artisanal character.
In general, tequila is considered to be a more refined and sophisticated spirit, while mezcal is often viewed as a more rustic and traditional drink. Both are popular in Mexico and are enjoyed around the world, so the best way to decide which one you like is to try them both and see which one suits your tastes.
