Rezpiral Aureliano Hernández | Series 6: Lumbre
Maestro: Aureliano Hernandez
Agave: 100% Lumbre (A. asperrima)
ABV: 48.1%
Location: San Baltazar Chichicapam, Oaxaca
A Rare Expression of Chichicapam Terroir The Series 6 Lumbre is a testament to the artistry of Maestro Aureliano Hernandez, one of the most respected names in the San Baltazar Chichicapam region. Lumbre is a mysterious and rare agave variety, named "fire" for its red-edged leaves and the bright, energetic spirit it produces.
At 48.1% ABV, this Series 6 release is a high-proof, small-batch treasure. It was crafted using traditional pit-roasting, tahona-crushing, and natural fermentation, resulting in a spirit that is as much a piece of Oaxacan history as it is a world-class distillate.
Tasting Notes
- Aroma: A sophisticated nose that opens with roasted agave nectar and campfire smoke. As it breathes, it reveals complex layers of dried chiles, leather, and a sharp, stony minerality characteristic of the Chichicapam soil.
- Palate: Robust and full-bodied. The initial spice, think cloves and peppercorns, is beautifully balanced by a creamy, buttery texture. You’ll find notes of grilled pineapple, mesquite, and a subtle salinity that keeps the palate refreshed.
- Finish: Bold and resonant. The 48.1% heat provides a structured backbone that carries flavors of bittersweet cocoa, wood ash, and a final, lingering kiss of sweet herbal mint.
The Collector’s Edge
Because Rezpiral operates on a fair-profit, small-batch model, every bottle of Series 6 is a limited artifact. Maestro Aureliano’s Lumbre is particularly sought after by agave purists for its "wild" profile; unfiltered, uncompromising, and deeply expressive of the land.
Serving Suggestion:
Best enjoyed neat at room temperature. Give it 5–10 minutes in the glass to fully unlock the intricate herbal notes hidden beneath the initial smoke.

What is the difference between Tequila & Mezcal?
Tequila is a type of mezcal, much like how scotch and bourbon are types of whiskey.
Tequila and mezcal are both types of agave-based spirits that are popular in Mexico, but there are some key differences between the two. Tequila is made exclusively from the blue agave plant, which is primarily grown in the area surrounding the city of Tequila, about 40 miles northwest of Guadalajara. Mezcal, on the other hand, can be made from any type of agave plant, and is often made using traditional, labor-intensive methods.
One of the most noticeable differences between tequila and mezcal is their flavor. Tequila is typically smooth and subtle, with hints of fruit and spices, while mezcal has a more complex, smoky flavor that comes from the roasting of the agave hearts before they are fermented and distilled.
Another difference between the two spirits is their production process. Tequila is typically made using modern industrial methods, while mezcal is often produced using traditional techniques that have been passed down for generations. This can give mezcal a more authentic, artisanal character.
In general, tequila is considered to be a more refined and sophisticated spirit, while mezcal is often viewed as a more rustic and traditional drink. Both are popular in Mexico and are enjoyed around the world, so the best way to decide which one you like is to try them both and see which one suits your tastes.
