Rey Campero Tepextate + Cuishe + Espadín Mezcal
The King's Field Blend: A Traditional Ensemble from Candelaria Yegolé
Introducing the Rey Campero Tepextate + Cuishe + Espadín Mezcal, a masterful "field blend" series created by the esteemed Maestro Mezcalero Rómulo Sánchez Parada.
This unique ensamble (blend) revives an ancient tradition, using ripe, ready-to-harvest agaves, Tepextate (Agave marmorata), Cuishe (Agave karwinskii), and Espadín (Agave angustifolia), rather than waiting for a large quantity of a single varietal. This approach allows for truly distinctive and dynamic mezcals, aligning with how these spirits were historically made across many Oaxacan regions.
"Campero," meaning "King of the Countryside," perfectly encapsulates this artisanal mezcal. It embodies the rich culture, tradition, and artistry of Candelaria Yegolé, a small town nestled in the Southern Highlands of Oaxaca. Founded by Rómulo Sánchez Parada, who inherited his knowledge from his father, Rey Campero is deeply committed to supporting maguey producers, creating jobs, and sharing the very best of Oaxacan mezcal with the world.
Tasting Notes
This ensamble is celebrated for its incredibly unique and playful flavor profile, offering a captivating balance of sweetness, spice, and savory notes.
- Aroma: Inviting and wonderfully unusual. Opens with a sweet, nostalgic hint of classic bubble gum and Big Red, underscored by a delicate cinnamon spice. Subtle mineral and earthy notes from the wild agaves peek through.
- Palate: Full-bodied and exceptionally enjoyable. The palate delivers a harmonious blend of tanginess, sweetness, and heat, perfectly balanced. The initial bubble gum and cinnamon notes transition into a distinctive, slight salinity reminiscent of movie theater popcorn. The wild agaves contribute complex layers of mineral earthiness and a hint of green fruit.
- Mouthfeel: Smooth and well-rounded, providing a pleasant texture that carries the complex flavors beautifully.
- Finish: Long and satisfying, with a subtle yet distinct butteriness that lingers on the finish. A gentle warmth and a final echo of the sweet-spicy-savory balance make this ensamble highly recommended.

What is the difference between Tequila & Mezcal?
Tequila is a type of mezcal, much like how scotch and bourbon are types of whiskey.
Tequila and mezcal are both types of agave-based spirits that are popular in Mexico, but there are some key differences between the two. Tequila is made exclusively from the blue agave plant, which is primarily grown in the area surrounding the city of Tequila, about 40 miles northwest of Guadalajara. Mezcal, on the other hand, can be made from any type of agave plant, and is often made using traditional, labor-intensive methods.
One of the most noticeable differences between tequila and mezcal is their flavor. Tequila is typically smooth and subtle, with hints of fruit and spices, while mezcal has a more complex, smoky flavor that comes from the roasting of the agave hearts before they are fermented and distilled.
Another difference between the two spirits is their production process. Tequila is typically made using modern industrial methods, while mezcal is often produced using traditional techniques that have been passed down for generations. This can give mezcal a more authentic, artisanal character.
In general, tequila is considered to be a more refined and sophisticated spirit, while mezcal is often viewed as a more rustic and traditional drink. Both are popular in Mexico and are enjoyed around the world, so the best way to decide which one you like is to try them both and see which one suits your tastes.
