Real Minero Largo Agave Spirit

Graciela's Favorite: The Elegant & Complex Largo from Real Minero

Discover the celebrated Real Minero Largo Agave Spirit, crafted from the majestic Agave karwinskii variant known locally as "Largo", a name that can be similar or synonymous with Tobaziche, depending on the specific community and local nomenclature. This exquisite spirit is not only a hallmark of the Real Minero portfolio but is reportedly the personal favorite of Graciela Ángeles Carreño, who co-helms the revered fifth-generation family operations in Santa Catarina Minas.

Real Minero, under the guidance of Graciela and Edgar Ángeles Carreño, produces exceptional Destilados de Agave, consciously opting out of the official Mezcal designation to preserve their ancestral clay-pot distillation techniques and their unwavering commitment to unadulterated agave expression. This Largo is often cited by connoisseurs as one of the finest agave spirits on the market, a true testament to the family's mastery and the unique character of this tall, columnar agave.

Tasting Notes

This Largo offers a sophisticated and evolving profile, combining a distinct peppery spice with rich, roasted notes and an intriguing hint of tropical sweetness.

  • Aroma: Inviting and multi-layered. Opens with a pronounced peppery spice that quickly melds into rich notes of roasted peanuts and a delicate, creamy hint of coconut. A subtle sweetness of cooked agave and a background of mineral earthiness frame the nose.
  • Palate: Full-bodied and beautifully structured. The palate delivers a harmonious blend of sweet roasted agave and a warming pepperiness. Rich notes of brown sugar and cinnamon emerge, providing a comforting, dessert-like quality that is elegantly balanced by the savory, nutty undertones. The inherent minerality from the clay pot distillation adds depth and complexity.
  • Mouthfeel: Smooth and luxurious, with a velvety texture that coats the palate, characteristic of its clay pot distillation.
  • Finish: Long, warm, and exceptionally clean. It leaves a persistent impression of sweet spice (cinnamon, pepper), lingering roasted nuts, and a final, delicate touch of agave sweetness and subtle earthiness.

What is the difference between Tequila & Mezcal?

Tequila is a type of mezcal, much like how scotch and bourbon are types of whiskey.

Tequila and mezcal are both types of agave-based spirits that are popular in Mexico, but there are some key differences between the two. Tequila is made exclusively from the blue agave plant, which is primarily grown in the area surrounding the city of Tequila, about 40 miles northwest of Guadalajara. Mezcal, on the other hand, can be made from any type of agave plant, and is often made using traditional, labor-intensive methods.

One of the most noticeable differences between tequila and mezcal is their flavor. Tequila is typically smooth and subtle, with hints of fruit and spices, while mezcal has a more complex, smoky flavor that comes from the roasting of the agave hearts before they are fermented and distilled.

Another difference between the two spirits is their production process. Tequila is typically made using modern industrial methods, while mezcal is often produced using traditional techniques that have been passed down for generations. This can give mezcal a more authentic, artisanal character.

In general, tequila is considered to be a more refined and sophisticated spirit, while mezcal is often viewed as a more rustic and traditional drink. Both are popular in Mexico and are enjoyed around the world, so the best way to decide which one you like is to try them both and see which one suits your tastes.
