Real Minero Barril Agave Spirit

The Forest Drum: A Fruity & Spicy Karwinskii from Real Minero

From the esteemed Ángeles Carreño family in Santa Catarina Minas comes a vibrant expression of Real Minero Barril Agave Spirit. Helmed by the talented fifth-generation producers Graciela and Edgar Ángeles Carreño, this spirit showcases the unique character of Agave karwinskii, specifically the Barril sub-varietal, through their ancestral distillation methods.

Real Minero proudly produces Destilados de Agave, upholding their centuries-old traditions while not adhering to the official Mezcal denomination. This commitment allows them the freedom to craft spirits like Barril, a classic expression of the Agave karwinskii family, known for its distinctive columnar growth. This particular Barril stands out, however, by being fruitier than most others on the market, offering a delightful complexity unique to the Ángeles Carreño family's touch.

Tasting Notes

This Barril offers a captivating and distinctive profile, balancing the classic Karwinskii earthiness and minerality with an unexpected burst of fruit and spice.

  • Aroma: Invitingly complex and aromatic. Bright notes of tropical fruits (pineapple, guava) and vibrant citrus zest (grapefruit, orange peel) are immediately present. A delicate pink peppercorn spice and a clean scent of fresh bark and damp earth beautifully frame these.
  • Palate: Full-bodied and exceptionally lively. The palate is packed with notes of pink peppercorn, offering a bright, piquant spice that dances with the sweet-tart tropical fruits and effervescent citrus. Underlying layers of fresh bark and a subtle, clean woodiness provide structure, while a gentle minerality characteristic of clay pot distillation emerges. This Barril is notably fruitier than many other Karwinskii expressions, making it remarkably vibrant.
  • Mouthfeel: Smooth, clean, and refreshing, with a pleasant, dry quality that encourages further exploration.
  • Finish: Medium-long and invigorating, leaving a persistent impression of zesty citrus, lingering pink peppercorn spice, and a clean, earthy woodiness.

What is the difference between Tequila & Mezcal?

Tequila is a type of mezcal, much like how scotch and bourbon are types of whiskey.

Tequila and mezcal are both types of agave-based spirits that are popular in Mexico, but there are some key differences between the two. Tequila is made exclusively from the blue agave plant, which is primarily grown in the area surrounding the city of Tequila, about 40 miles northwest of Guadalajara. Mezcal, on the other hand, can be made from any type of agave plant, and is often made using traditional, labor-intensive methods.

One of the most noticeable differences between tequila and mezcal is their flavor. Tequila is typically smooth and subtle, with hints of fruit and spices, while mezcal has a more complex, smoky flavor that comes from the roasting of the agave hearts before they are fermented and distilled.

Another difference between the two spirits is their production process. Tequila is typically made using modern industrial methods, while mezcal is often produced using traditional techniques that have been passed down for generations. This can give mezcal a more authentic, artisanal character.

In general, tequila is considered to be a more refined and sophisticated spirit, while mezcal is often viewed as a more rustic and traditional drink. Both are popular in Mexico and are enjoyed around the world, so the best way to decide which one you like is to try them both and see which one suits your tastes.
