Pierre Ferrand Dry Curacao Liqueur

Pierre Ferrand Dry Curacao is a meticulously crafted orange liqueur that resurrects the style and complexity of 19th-century "triple secs." Developed in a unique collaboration between Master Blender Alexandre Gabriel and cocktail historian David Wondrich, this spirit is a tribute to the classic liqueurs that were a staple of the Golden Age of cocktails.

Unlike many modern orange liqueurs, Pierre Ferrand Dry Curacao is made with a base of fine Ferrand Cognac and unaged brandy. It is created from three separate distillations of bitter Curaçao orange peels, spices, and a “vegetal infusion” of other botanicals. The final blend is then aged in oak casks for several months, allowing the flavors to marry and deepen, resulting in a liqueur that is both rich and perfectly balanced. The "dry" in its name refers to its less-sweet, more spirit-forward character, making it a favorite of mixologists worldwide.

Tasting Notes

  • Color: A bright, golden amber.
  • Aroma: The nose is an explosion of vibrant orange zest and candied orange peel, with a distinct layer of black pepper, cinnamon, and clove. Underlying notes of vanilla, toasted wood, and a hint of a nutty character from the Cognac provide a sophisticated backdrop.
  • Palate: The entry presents a beautifully balanced interplay of sweet and bitter notes. A luscious, velvety mouthfeel gives way to a powerful burst of bitter orange, complemented by flavors of dried apricot, baking spice, and a subtle warmth from the brandy. The spirit's inherent dryness keeps it from being cloying, highlighting the authentic orange and spice notes.
  • Finish: The finish is long, clean, and elegant. A lingering zestiness of orange peel and a gentle warmth from the Cognac fade slowly, leaving a pleasant dryness and a memory of baking spices.

Pierre Ferrand Dry Curacao is an essential addition to any bar, capable of elevating classic cocktails like the Mai Tai, Sidecar, or Margarita. It is also an exceptional sipping liqueur, perfect neat or on the rocks.

What is the difference between Tequila & Mezcal?

Tequila is a type of mezcal, much like how scotch and bourbon are types of whiskey.

Tequila and mezcal are both types of agave-based spirits that are popular in Mexico, but there are some key differences between the two. Tequila is made exclusively from the blue agave plant, which is primarily grown in the area surrounding the city of Tequila, about 40 miles northwest of Guadalajara. Mezcal, on the other hand, can be made from any type of agave plant, and is often made using traditional, labor-intensive methods.

One of the most noticeable differences between tequila and mezcal is their flavor. Tequila is typically smooth and subtle, with hints of fruit and spices, while mezcal has a more complex, smoky flavor that comes from the roasting of the agave hearts before they are fermented and distilled.

Another difference between the two spirits is their production process. Tequila is typically made using modern industrial methods, while mezcal is often produced using traditional techniques that have been passed down for generations. This can give mezcal a more authentic, artisanal character.

In general, tequila is considered to be a more refined and sophisticated spirit, while mezcal is often viewed as a more rustic and traditional drink. Both are popular in Mexico and are enjoyed around the world, so the best way to decide which one you like is to try them both and see which one suits your tastes.
