Pasión Ancestral Espadín
Pasión Ancestral Espadín Mezcal is the cornerstone of the collection, a testament to the timeless traditions passed down through generations. Crafted from 100% Agave angustifolia, commonly known as Espadín, this mezcal embodies the rich heritage of Grandfather Juan Colmenares, who started producing Mezcal Leno in 1894 in Santa Catarina, Minas Duala.
Espadín, renowned for its versatility and balance, is carefully cultivated and harvested at optimal maturity. Following ancestral methods, the agave hearts are slow-roasted in earthen ovens, milled by hand, and double-distilled in traditional clay pots. This meticulous process imparts a profound depth of flavor and a silky texture, yielding a mezcal that is approachable yet complex. Pasión Ancestral Espadín is a celebration of authentic Oaxacan mezcal, perfect for both connoisseurs and those new to the world of agave spirits.
Tasting Notes:
- Nose: A harmonious bouquet of cooked agave sweetness, often likened to caramelized pineapple or honey, balanced with a delicate smoky earthiness and subtle mineral notes. Hints of light citrus, green herbs, or a whisper of vanilla may also emerge.
- Palate: Smooth and inviting, with a beautiful balance between sweet and savory. Flavors of roasted agave, ripe fruit (pear, apple), and sweet potato are often present, intertwined with a gentle smokiness and a clean, earthy minerality from the clay pot distillation. A touch of black pepper or cinnamon spice can add further complexity.
- Finish: Clean, lingering, and exceptionally smooth. The finish typically highlights the roasted agave sweetness with a pleasant, subtle smoky warmth and a refined, lasting minerality, inviting another sip.

What is the difference between Tequila & Mezcal?
Tequila is a type of mezcal, much like how scotch and bourbon are types of whiskey.
Tequila and mezcal are both types of agave-based spirits that are popular in Mexico, but there are some key differences between the two. Tequila is made exclusively from the blue agave plant, which is primarily grown in the area surrounding the city of Tequila, about 40 miles northwest of Guadalajara. Mezcal, on the other hand, can be made from any type of agave plant, and is often made using traditional, labor-intensive methods.
One of the most noticeable differences between tequila and mezcal is their flavor. Tequila is typically smooth and subtle, with hints of fruit and spices, while mezcal has a more complex, smoky flavor that comes from the roasting of the agave hearts before they are fermented and distilled.
Another difference between the two spirits is their production process. Tequila is typically made using modern industrial methods, while mezcal is often produced using traditional techniques that have been passed down for generations. This can give mezcal a more authentic, artisanal character.
In general, tequila is considered to be a more refined and sophisticated spirit, while mezcal is often viewed as a more rustic and traditional drink. Both are popular in Mexico and are enjoyed around the world, so the best way to decide which one you like is to try them both and see which one suits your tastes.
