Olmeca Altos Reposado
Olmeca Altos Reposado is a premium, 100% Blue Weber Agave tequila that strikes a masterful balance between the bright, citrusy energy of a Blanco and the smooth, woody complexity of an aged spirit. Born from a partnership between Maestro Tequilero Jesús Hernández and two legendary bartenders, this Reposado is specifically designed to be the "workhorse" of a high-end bar, versatile enough for the perfect cocktail, yet refined enough to be enjoyed on its own.
Like the rest of the Altos line, it is produced in the Highlands of Jalisco, using agave that is slow-cooked in brick ovens. The secret to its depth lies in the use of the Tahona method, where a portion of the agave is crushed by a two-ton volcanic stone wheel to extract the richest essential oils.
The Aging Process
Altos Reposado is aged for 6 to 8 months in selected 200-liter white oak ex-bourbon barrels. This period of rest is the "sweet spot" for the brand; it is long enough to soften the spirit and introduce notes of vanilla and spice, but short enough to ensure the fresh, herbal character of the Highland agave remains the star of the show.
Tasting Notes
- Appearance: A light, shimmering gold with straw-colored highlights.
- Aroma: A complex and inviting nose. It opens with the scent of sweet, roasted agave and fresh herbal notes, followed by a delicate wave of vanilla, orange peel, and a touch of white pepper.
- Palate: The mouthfeel is smooth and slightly creamy. On the tongue, you’ll find a beautiful harmony of citrus (think pink grapefruit) and cooked agave, underpinned by the mellow sweetness of honey and toasted almonds from the oak. Finish: Clean and well-balanced. It closes with a lingering warmth of dry oak and a soft, fruity sweetness that invites another sip.
Serving Recommendation
While it is an exceptional sipping tequila when served neat or on the rocks, Olmeca Altos Reposado is world-renowned for its performance in cocktails. Its robust profile makes it the definitive choice for a Top-Shelf Margarita or a Paloma, as its woody undertones provide a structural backbone that prevents the citrus and agave from being overshadowed.

What is the difference between Tequila & Mezcal?
Tequila is a type of mezcal, much like how scotch and bourbon are types of whiskey.
Tequila and mezcal are both types of agave-based spirits that are popular in Mexico, but there are some key differences between the two. Tequila is made exclusively from the blue agave plant, which is primarily grown in the area surrounding the city of Tequila, about 40 miles northwest of Guadalajara. Mezcal, on the other hand, can be made from any type of agave plant, and is often made using traditional, labor-intensive methods.
One of the most noticeable differences between tequila and mezcal is their flavor. Tequila is typically smooth and subtle, with hints of fruit and spices, while mezcal has a more complex, smoky flavor that comes from the roasting of the agave hearts before they are fermented and distilled.
Another difference between the two spirits is their production process. Tequila is typically made using modern industrial methods, while mezcal is often produced using traditional techniques that have been passed down for generations. This can give mezcal a more authentic, artisanal character.
In general, tequila is considered to be a more refined and sophisticated spirit, while mezcal is often viewed as a more rustic and traditional drink. Both are popular in Mexico and are enjoyed around the world, so the best way to decide which one you like is to try them both and see which one suits your tastes.
