Mezonte Jorge Michoacán Alto (Inaequidens) Destilado de Agave

Batch Size: 400 Liters

Harvest/Production: December 2025

Origin: Río de Parras, Michoacán (Maestro Mezcalero Jorge Pérez)

Product Overview

Crafted by Maestro Mezcalero Jorge Pérez in the rugged terrain of Río de Parras, Michoacán, this limited 400-liter batch of Destilado de Agave is a masterclass in ancestral Mexican distilling. Produced from wild-harvested Maguey Alto (Agave inaequidens), a majestic agave variety native to the region that demands years to reach maturity, this expression offers an uncompromised window into local terroir and heritage craft.

The production follows deeply traditional methods: the agave heads are fermented in masonry tanks (tinas de mamposteria) for 15 days, utilizing natural spring water and inoculated with traditional pulque to drive a vibrant, complex fermentation. True to the ancestral roots of the region, it undergoes a double distillation in a traditional Filipino-style still, featuring a copper basin (cazo de cobre) and a hollowed-out oyamel fir tree trunk lid (montera de oyamel).

Tasting Notes

  • Aroma: An intensely aromatic and evocative nose opens with deep layers of damp earth, pine needles, and fresh morning grass, giving way to vibrant undertones of bubblegum, ripe strawberry, and a delicate touch of lactic funkiness reminiscent of cultured cream and baked brie.
  • Palate: A powerful, structured entry balances structural acidity with rich natural sweetness. Notes of juicy tropical fruits, fresh mint, and spearmint evolve into savory, earthy mid-palate complexities featuring wet hay, subtle minerality, and roasted agave.
  • Finish: Exceptionally long, warming, and dry, leaving behind a clean herbal echo, lingering orchard fruit, and a pleasant, rustic minerality.

Serving Suggestion

Best enjoyed neat in a traditional copita, allowing the spirit to breathe and evolve across the palate. A rare collector’s release that honors the timeless traditions of Michoacán distillation.

What is the difference between Tequila & Mezcal?

Tequila is a type of mezcal, much like how scotch and bourbon are types of whiskey.

Tequila and mezcal are both types of agave-based spirits that are popular in Mexico, but there are some key differences between the two. Tequila is made exclusively from the blue agave plant, which is primarily grown in the area surrounding the city of Tequila, about 40 miles northwest of Guadalajara. Mezcal, on the other hand, can be made from any type of agave plant, and is often made using traditional, labor-intensive methods.

One of the most noticeable differences between tequila and mezcal is their flavor. Tequila is typically smooth and subtle, with hints of fruit and spices, while mezcal has a more complex, smoky flavor that comes from the roasting of the agave hearts before they are fermented and distilled.

Another difference between the two spirits is their production process. Tequila is typically made using modern industrial methods, while mezcal is often produced using traditional techniques that have been passed down for generations. This can give mezcal a more authentic, artisanal character.

In general, tequila is considered to be a more refined and sophisticated spirit, while mezcal is often viewed as a more rustic and traditional drink. Both are popular in Mexico and are enjoyed around the world, so the best way to decide which one you like is to try them both and see which one suits your tastes.
