Mezonte "Japo & Family" Amarillo (Rhodacantha) Raicilla
A Masterpiece of Heritage, Lunar Tradition, and Rare Agave
Experience a spirit that is as much a piece of Mexican history as it is a world-class distillate. Crafted by the legendary 87-year-old maestro Hildegardo “Japo” Joya in the rugged terrain of Cabo Corrientes, Jalisco, this Raicilla is a testament to a lifetime of craft.
This specific expression features the maguey Amarillo (Agave rhodacantha), a relative of the famed Mexicano agave, harvested exclusively under the light of a full moon—a tradition Japo maintains to ensure the plant's energy and sugar are at their peak.
The Producer: Hildegardo “Japo” Joya. Japo is a living icon in the world of agave. Even in his late 80s, he continues to produce small, artisanal batches that define the Cabo Corrientes style. This 2022 distillation comes from a remarkably small 250-liter batch (Lote #887), offering a rare opportunity to taste the work of a master at the height of his wisdom.
Tasting Profile:
Complex & Unapologetically Funky
This isn't your standard spirit; it is a "thinker’s" agave spirit, known for its bold, evolving character.
- Aroma: Deeply artisanal with notes of tangy yogurt, sea brine, damp earth, and tropical fruit.
- Palate: A layered explosion of cooked agave sweetness balanced by savory, vegetal undertones and a hint of warming spice.
- Finish: Complex and lingering, characterized by the "funky" profile that Raicilla aficionados prize.
The Mezonte Mission
Mezonte is a non-profit dedicated to preserving the cultural and biological heritage of traditional agave spirits. When you purchase a bottle of Mezonte, you are supporting:
- Community Preservation: Mezonte only buys 60% of any batch, ensuring the local community retains enough to continue their own centuries-old traditions.
- Fair Trade: Supporting family producers like Japo and his family directly.4Bio-Diversity: Promoting the use of wild and traditional agave species over industrial monocultures.
Note: Due to the extremely limited batch size and Japo’s legendary status, this Raicilla is a high-priority acquisition for serious spirits collectors and those who appreciate the intersection of culture and craft.

What is the difference between Tequila & Mezcal?
Tequila is a type of mezcal, much like how scotch and bourbon are types of whiskey.
Tequila and mezcal are both types of agave-based spirits that are popular in Mexico, but there are some key differences between the two. Tequila is made exclusively from the blue agave plant, which is primarily grown in the area surrounding the city of Tequila, about 40 miles northwest of Guadalajara. Mezcal, on the other hand, can be made from any type of agave plant, and is often made using traditional, labor-intensive methods.
One of the most noticeable differences between tequila and mezcal is their flavor. Tequila is typically smooth and subtle, with hints of fruit and spices, while mezcal has a more complex, smoky flavor that comes from the roasting of the agave hearts before they are fermented and distilled.
Another difference between the two spirits is their production process. Tequila is typically made using modern industrial methods, while mezcal is often produced using traditional techniques that have been passed down for generations. This can give mezcal a more authentic, artisanal character.
In general, tequila is considered to be a more refined and sophisticated spirit, while mezcal is often viewed as a more rustic and traditional drink. Both are popular in Mexico and are enjoyed around the world, so the best way to decide which one you like is to try them both and see which one suits your tastes.
