MDM Arroqueño: San Vicente Coatlán, Ejutla
This rare agave spirit is a tribute to the patience of the Oaxacan landscape and the expertise of Maestro Teodomiro Santiago Hernandez. Crafted from the legendary Arroqueño agave (Agave Americana), this expression is a showcase of one of the largest and longest-maturing agaves.
Harvested in San Vicente Coatlán within the Ejutla district, these massive plants often take 15 to 20 years to reach maturity. Under the guidance of Maestro Hernandez, the high sugar content of the Arroqueño is transformed into a spirit of immense depth and elegance.
Tasting Notes
Presented in a 750ml bottle, this Arroqueño typically sits at a robust proof, preserving the delicate floral esters of the wild agave.
- Aroma: An incredibly perfume-like nose. It leads with sweet cream and cooked agave, followed by complex notes of dried apricot, melon, and a hint of fresh gardenia.
- Palate: The texture is velvety and expansive. Deep flavors of dark chocolate and roasted nuts balance beautifully against a bright, lactic sweetness. You may also notice a subtle vegetal note reminiscent of green bell pepper.
- Finish: Long and sophisticated. It leaves a trace of sweet wood smoke and a cooling, minty mineral sensation that reflects the San Vicente Coatlán soil.
The Maestro's Touch
Maestro Teodomiro Santiago Hernandez is celebrated for his adherence to traditional Ejutla methods. This includes:
- Conical Earth Pit Roasting: Slow-cooking the agave with local wood to impart a gentle, integrated smokiness.
- Natural Fermentation: Using ambient yeasts in wooden vats to develop the spirit's unique funk and character.
- Refined Distillation: Achieving a clean, high-clarity profile that emphasizes the raw beauty of the Agave Americana.
Why It Is Special
The Arroqueño agave is often considered the "king of agaves" due to its size and the time it takes to mature. Because these plants are increasingly rare, each batch from MDM represents a fleeting snapshot of Oaxacan heritage. This is a sipper for those who appreciate the slower side of spirit production.

What is the difference between Tequila & Mezcal?
Tequila is a type of mezcal, much like how scotch and bourbon are types of whiskey.
Tequila and mezcal are both types of agave-based spirits that are popular in Mexico, but there are some key differences between the two. Tequila is made exclusively from the blue agave plant, which is primarily grown in the area surrounding the city of Tequila, about 40 miles northwest of Guadalajara. Mezcal, on the other hand, can be made from any type of agave plant, and is often made using traditional, labor-intensive methods.
One of the most noticeable differences between tequila and mezcal is their flavor. Tequila is typically smooth and subtle, with hints of fruit and spices, while mezcal has a more complex, smoky flavor that comes from the roasting of the agave hearts before they are fermented and distilled.
Another difference between the two spirits is their production process. Tequila is typically made using modern industrial methods, while mezcal is often produced using traditional techniques that have been passed down for generations. This can give mezcal a more authentic, artisanal character.
In general, tequila is considered to be a more refined and sophisticated spirit, while mezcal is often viewed as a more rustic and traditional drink. Both are popular in Mexico and are enjoyed around the world, so the best way to decide which one you like is to try them both and see which one suits your tastes.
