MCV Wines Petite Sirah Paso Robles 2021

Founded by the Villard family in 2011, MCV Wines has established itself in Paso Robles' Tin City district with a clear mission: to elevate Petite Sirah from a blending grape to a focused, standalone varietal worthy of serious attention. Winemaker Matthew Villard applies an obsessive quality-first approach to this 2021 release, sourcing fruit from a region known for its warm days, cool nights, and calcareous soils. This combination yields a wine of immense depth and concentration that is built for the long haul while remaining expressive enough to enjoy today.

Tasting Notes

  • Nose: Deep and aromatic, opening with roasted black fruit elevated by hints of thyme, followed by complex layers of blueberry, crushed granite, dark chocolate, smoked meat, and coffee grounds.
  • Palate: Bold and structured, where blackberry and fresh blueberry reign supreme. These fruit flavors are accented by savory notes of white pepper, oregano, wet stone, and rich drip coffee.
  • Finish: Big, powerful, and persistent, showcasing the substantial tannins and depth that make this variety famous for its aging potential.

Aging & Enjoyment

This wine is drinkable now, but it will show even better with 3 to 5 years of bottle age. It has the structural integrity to reward cellaring for more than a decade for those who enjoy developed secondary characteristics.

Serving Suggestions

Because Petite Sirah is a naturally high-tannin, full-bodied red, thoughtful serving preparation and food pairings will bring out its best qualities:

  • Preparation & Temperature Decanting: Highly recommended. Give this wine a 60 to 90-minute decant before serving to let the bold fruit aromas unfurl and to soften its firm tannic structure.
  • Serving Temperature: Serve slightly cool at 60°F–65°F (15°C–18°C). If the bottle is at room temperature, give it 15–20 minutes in the fridge before pouring to keep the high-alcohol and dark fruit notes balanced.

Food Pairings

The dense structure, savory herb undertones, and dark fruit intensity of MCV Petite Sirah pair best with rich, highly flavorful dishes:

  • Red Meats: Slow-braised beef short ribs, smoked brisket, grilled ribeye steak with a peppercorn crust, or herb-crusted rack of lamb.
  • Game & Poultry: Roast duck with a berry reduction or braised venison stew.
  • Cheeses: Aged, sharp, or savory cheeses like aged Gouda, blue cheese, clothbound cheddar, or smoked Provolone.
  • Vegetarian Option: Portobello mushroom steaks topped with garlic and rosemary, or a hearty lentil and mushroom ragù served over creamy polenta.

What is the difference between Tequila & Mezcal?

Tequila is a type of mezcal, much like how scotch and bourbon are types of whiskey.

Tequila and mezcal are both types of agave-based spirits that are popular in Mexico, but there are some key differences between the two. Tequila is made exclusively from the blue agave plant, which is primarily grown in the area surrounding the city of Tequila, about 40 miles northwest of Guadalajara. Mezcal, on the other hand, can be made from any type of agave plant, and is often made using traditional, labor-intensive methods.

One of the most noticeable differences between tequila and mezcal is their flavor. Tequila is typically smooth and subtle, with hints of fruit and spices, while mezcal has a more complex, smoky flavor that comes from the roasting of the agave hearts before they are fermented and distilled.

Another difference between the two spirits is their production process. Tequila is typically made using modern industrial methods, while mezcal is often produced using traditional techniques that have been passed down for generations. This can give mezcal a more authentic, artisanal character.

In general, tequila is considered to be a more refined and sophisticated spirit, while mezcal is often viewed as a more rustic and traditional drink. Both are popular in Mexico and are enjoyed around the world, so the best way to decide which one you like is to try them both and see which one suits your tastes.
