Mariatinto Red Blend (Baja California, Mexico)

A true pioneer of the Mexican wine movement, Mariatinto was born from a collaboration between Chef Guillermo González Beristáin and wine expert Humberto Falcón. This "ensemble" wine is designed with a gastronomic soul, specifically crafted to pair seamlessly with the diverse and bold flavors of Mexican cuisine.

Produced in the Valle de Guadalupe and surrounding Ensenada regions, Mariatinto is a sophisticated blend that captures the Mediterranean-like terroir of Baja California, where intense Pacific sunshine meets cooling ocean breezes.

Tasting Notes

  • Appearance: An intense, bright ruby red with deep violet reflections and a clean, polished rim.
  • Aroma: The nose is powerful and complex. It opens with a vibrant burst of black and red fruits, blackberry, ripe plum, and raspberry. As the wine breathes, it reveals elegant floral layers of violets and rose petals, grounded by savory hints of leather, fresh-cracked black pepper, and roasted coffee.
  • Palate: Full-bodied yet remarkably balanced. The entry is fruity and intense, supported by firm, velvety tannins and a refreshing streak of acidity that keeps the wine lively. You’ll find nuanced notes of dark chocolate, vanilla, and cedar, a result of its careful 12-month aging in French oak.
  • Finish: Long and elegant, leaving a lingering impression of dark berries and spiced cocoa.

Food Pairing & Service

Mariatinto was created by a chef, so it shines brightest alongside food. It is the perfect partner for:

  • Grilled Meats: Ribeye, lamb chops, or traditional arrachera.
  • Mexican Classics: Duck carnitas, mole poblano, or rich, spice-driven stews.
  • Aged Cheeses: Hard sheep’s milk cheeses or robust semi-soft varieties.

Service Tip:

Best served at 16°C to 18°C. We recommend decanting for 30 minutes to allow the complex aromatics of the Syrah and Nebbiolo to fully unfold.

What is the difference between Tequila & Mezcal?

Tequila is a type of mezcal, much like how scotch and bourbon are types of whiskey.

Tequila and mezcal are both types of agave-based spirits that are popular in Mexico, but there are some key differences between the two. Tequila is made exclusively from the blue agave plant, which is primarily grown in the area surrounding the city of Tequila, about 40 miles northwest of Guadalajara. Mezcal, on the other hand, can be made from any type of agave plant, and is often made using traditional, labor-intensive methods.

One of the most noticeable differences between tequila and mezcal is their flavor. Tequila is typically smooth and subtle, with hints of fruit and spices, while mezcal has a more complex, smoky flavor that comes from the roasting of the agave hearts before they are fermented and distilled.

Another difference between the two spirits is their production process. Tequila is typically made using modern industrial methods, while mezcal is often produced using traditional techniques that have been passed down for generations. This can give mezcal a more authentic, artisanal character.

In general, tequila is considered to be a more refined and sophisticated spirit, while mezcal is often viewed as a more rustic and traditional drink. Both are popular in Mexico and are enjoyed around the world, so the best way to decide which one you like is to try them both and see which one suits your tastes.
