Mal Bien Victor & Emanuel Ramos Arroqueño (750ml)
This El Buen Comer Private Batch is a remarkable collaboration between the Mal Bien team and the father-son duo Victor and Emanuel Ramos. Produced in Miahuatlán de Porfirio Díaz, Oaxaca, this expression showcases the legendary Arroqueño agave, a massive variety known for its long maturation period and deep, complex sugars.
Bottled at 48.5% ABV, this private batch highlights the precision and traditional Bicuixe-style heritage the Ramos family is famous for.
Tasting Notes
- Aroma: The nose is dense and earthy, opening with the signature "Miahuatlán" mineral funk. Deep notes of roasted sweet potato and cocoa are balanced by high-toned floral scents and a touch of dried tropical fruit.
- Palate: Full-bodied and velvety. The 48.5% ABV carries a concentrated wave of flavor, starting with rich chocolate and dark honey. As it opens up, layers of spicy cinnamon, leather, and a savory, olive-like brine emerge.
- Finish: Exceptionally long and evolving. It leaves a lingering sweetness reminiscent of brown sugar and baked agave, anchored by a dry, stony minerality and a soft, refined smoke.
The Producers
Victor and Emanuel Ramos are master palenqueros who represent generations of expertise in the Miahuatlán region. Their process remains deeply traditional, utilizing underground conical ovens for roasting and ox-drawn tahonas for crushing. This Arroqueño was fermented naturally with well water and ambient yeast before being distilled in small copper refreshcador stills. This specific El Buen Comer private bottling represents a carefully selected cut, offering a singular experience of one of the most prestigious agaves in the world.

What is the difference between Tequila & Mezcal?
Tequila is a type of mezcal, much like how scotch and bourbon are types of whiskey.
Tequila and mezcal are both types of agave-based spirits that are popular in Mexico, but there are some key differences between the two. Tequila is made exclusively from the blue agave plant, which is primarily grown in the area surrounding the city of Tequila, about 40 miles northwest of Guadalajara. Mezcal, on the other hand, can be made from any type of agave plant, and is often made using traditional, labor-intensive methods.
One of the most noticeable differences between tequila and mezcal is their flavor. Tequila is typically smooth and subtle, with hints of fruit and spices, while mezcal has a more complex, smoky flavor that comes from the roasting of the agave hearts before they are fermented and distilled.
Another difference between the two spirits is their production process. Tequila is typically made using modern industrial methods, while mezcal is often produced using traditional techniques that have been passed down for generations. This can give mezcal a more authentic, artisanal character.
In general, tequila is considered to be a more refined and sophisticated spirit, while mezcal is often viewed as a more rustic and traditional drink. Both are popular in Mexico and are enjoyed around the world, so the best way to decide which one you like is to try them both and see which one suits your tastes.
