Mal Bien Zacate Limón (Lemongrass) Mezcal
The Aromatic Abocado: Lucio Morales López's Original Recipe
Discover the vibrant freshness of the Mal Bien Zacate Limón (Lemongrass), a unique Destilado con spirit from Maestro Mezcalero Lucio Morales López in San Dionisio Ocotepec, Oaxaca. This exceptional expression is abocado (flavored) with freshly harvested lemongrass (zacate limón)—a recipe originally created by Don Lucio specifically for his wife, Agustina, to enjoy.
Unlike a standard mezcal, the Zacate Limón is a "destilado con," meaning the lemongrass is introduced during the second distillation, and sometimes slightly macerated in the finished product for extra aromatic brilliance.
This meticulous process results in an incredibly bright and lively mezcal, perfectly balancing the classic smoke and earthiness of Espadín with a refreshing, citrus-forward herbaceousness.3 It’s an ideal summertime sipper, a stunning base for cocktails, and a perfect substitute for gin in classics like a Mezcal & Tonic.
Tasting Notes
This mezcal offers an aromatic and zesty profile, where the herbal infusion beautifully lifts the traditional cooked agave.
- Aroma: Immediately bright and herbaceous. Dominant notes of freshly cut lemongrass, Eureka lemon zest, and pine needles are layered over a base of cooked agave, with subtle hints of wet earth and gentle smoke.
- Palate: Clean, lively, and wonderfully refreshing. The flavor is a harmonious blend of sweet citrus blossoms, sage, and lemon oil. The core Espadín provides notes of sweet agave and a mineral-driven, earthy structure, complemented by the slightest savory flavor of burnt earth and pine.
- Mouthfeel: Light-bodied and crisp, often compared to lemon oil, it is smooth, bright, and invigoratingly dry.
- Finish: Long, delicate, and highly aromatic. It leaves a persistent impression of fresh herbs and zesty citrus, cleansing the palate and making it highly repeatable.

What is the difference between Tequila & Mezcal?
Tequila is a type of mezcal, much like how scotch and bourbon are types of whiskey.
Tequila and mezcal are both types of agave-based spirits that are popular in Mexico, but there are some key differences between the two. Tequila is made exclusively from the blue agave plant, which is primarily grown in the area surrounding the city of Tequila, about 40 miles northwest of Guadalajara. Mezcal, on the other hand, can be made from any type of agave plant, and is often made using traditional, labor-intensive methods.
One of the most noticeable differences between tequila and mezcal is their flavor. Tequila is typically smooth and subtle, with hints of fruit and spices, while mezcal has a more complex, smoky flavor that comes from the roasting of the agave hearts before they are fermented and distilled.
Another difference between the two spirits is their production process. Tequila is typically made using modern industrial methods, while mezcal is often produced using traditional techniques that have been passed down for generations. This can give mezcal a more authentic, artisanal character.
In general, tequila is considered to be a more refined and sophisticated spirit, while mezcal is often viewed as a more rustic and traditional drink. Both are popular in Mexico and are enjoyed around the world, so the best way to decide which one you like is to try them both and see which one suits your tastes.
