Mal Bien Arroqueño (Ramos)
The Royal Agave: Sugar-Rich Arroqueño from the Ramos Legacy
Experience the majesty of Mal Bien Arroqueño (Ramos), a powerful and expressive mezcal distilled from a single, exceptional field of sugar-rich Agave americana var. oaxacensis, commonly known as Arroqueño. This special, (relatively) large batch hails from the neighboring community of El Sauz, showcasing the intense, complex flavors this revered maguey is known for.
This extraordinary spirit is brought to you by Victor and Emanuel Ramos, the third and fourth generations of their clan, who continue the mezcal tradition in the renowned Miahuatlán District of Oaxaca. Their deep familial ties—linked to the neighboring Cortés family through Cleotilde (Victor’s wife and Emanuel's mother)—underscore the rich, interconnected community that upholds the highest standards of Oaxacan mezcal production.
Tasting Notes
Arroqueño is famed for producing mezcals with immense depth, complexity, and a characteristic fruity-herbal profile.
- Aroma: Rich and multi-layered. Opens with an intense burst of tropical fruit, ripe pineapple, and green mango, followed by complex notes of fresh leather, cured tobacco, and sweet caramel. A subtle mineral-driven earthiness grounds the nose.
- Palate: Full-bodied and profoundly flavorful. The sugar-rich agave yields a velvety palate with dark chocolate, baking spice (nutmeg, clove), and a distinct herbal-mint freshness. A pronounced minerality and a well-integrated, savory wood smoke provide balance and structure.
- Mouthfeel: Luxurious, oily, and coating, with a balanced warmth that expands beautifully across the palate.
- Finish: Exceptionally long and evolving. The finish highlights notes of dark dried fruit (raisin, fig), lingering sweet smoke, and a touch of wet clay, leaving a clean, powerful final impression.

What is the difference between Tequila & Mezcal?
Tequila is a type of mezcal, much like how scotch and bourbon are types of whiskey.
Tequila and mezcal are both types of agave-based spirits that are popular in Mexico, but there are some key differences between the two. Tequila is made exclusively from the blue agave plant, which is primarily grown in the area surrounding the city of Tequila, about 40 miles northwest of Guadalajara. Mezcal, on the other hand, can be made from any type of agave plant, and is often made using traditional, labor-intensive methods.
One of the most noticeable differences between tequila and mezcal is their flavor. Tequila is typically smooth and subtle, with hints of fruit and spices, while mezcal has a more complex, smoky flavor that comes from the roasting of the agave hearts before they are fermented and distilled.
Another difference between the two spirits is their production process. Tequila is typically made using modern industrial methods, while mezcal is often produced using traditional techniques that have been passed down for generations. This can give mezcal a more authentic, artisanal character.
In general, tequila is considered to be a more refined and sophisticated spirit, while mezcal is often viewed as a more rustic and traditional drink. Both are popular in Mexico and are enjoyed around the world, so the best way to decide which one you like is to try them both and see which one suits your tastes.
