Lucero "Verde & Cuerno" Agave Spirit (Jesús & Daniel Navarro)
Experience one of the rarest and culturally significant spirits in Mexico. Crafted by brothers Jesus and Daniel Navarro in the high desert of Palmar Segundo, San Luis Potosí, this uncertified mezcal (labeled as Agave Spirit) is a masterclass in ancestral "Campanilla" distillation.
The Navarro family is among the last to preserve the 400-year-old Campanilla tradition, utilizing unique clay pot stills with internal collection bells. This expression is an "ensamble" of two wild sub-varieties of Agave Salmiana: the massive, slow-growing Verde and the spirited Cuerno.
Bottled at a powerful 50% ABV, it is a spirit of profound depth, complexity, and history.
Tasting Notes
- Appearance: Clear and bright with high-viscosity "legs" that cling to the glass, a testament to its 50% proof and rich agave oils.
- Aroma: The nose is a vibrant journey through the San Luis Potosí desert. It opens with fresh green bell pepper, grapefruit zest, and wet slate. As it sits, sweeter layers of coconut, cucumber, and a hint of chili salt emerge, grounded by an earthy, mineral backbone.
- Palate:
- The entry is unexpectedly lush and "juicy." You’ll find a sophisticated balance of savory and sweet: notes of brown sugar, licorice, and green apple are punctuated by crushed peppercorn and mint. The use of pulque in the fermentation adds a creamy mouthfeel without the "funk" often associated with the process.
- Finish: Long, clean, and exceptionally savory. It leaves a lingering impression of white pepper, salty caramel, and jicama, with a cooling herbal touch that invites another sip.
The "Campanilla" Heritage
The Navarros roast their agave in above-ground earthen ovens using dry agave leaves and volcanic rock, resulting in a spirit with very little smoke, allowing the true, herbal flavors of the Salmiana agave to shine. This batch is produced in extremely limited quantities, often only 80 to 90 liters at a time, making it a true collector’s item.

What is the difference between Tequila & Mezcal?
Tequila is a type of mezcal, much like how scotch and bourbon are types of whiskey.
Tequila and mezcal are both types of agave-based spirits that are popular in Mexico, but there are some key differences between the two. Tequila is made exclusively from the blue agave plant, which is primarily grown in the area surrounding the city of Tequila, about 40 miles northwest of Guadalajara. Mezcal, on the other hand, can be made from any type of agave plant, and is often made using traditional, labor-intensive methods.
One of the most noticeable differences between tequila and mezcal is their flavor. Tequila is typically smooth and subtle, with hints of fruit and spices, while mezcal has a more complex, smoky flavor that comes from the roasting of the agave hearts before they are fermented and distilled.
Another difference between the two spirits is their production process. Tequila is typically made using modern industrial methods, while mezcal is often produced using traditional techniques that have been passed down for generations. This can give mezcal a more authentic, artisanal character.
In general, tequila is considered to be a more refined and sophisticated spirit, while mezcal is often viewed as a more rustic and traditional drink. Both are popular in Mexico and are enjoyed around the world, so the best way to decide which one you like is to try them both and see which one suits your tastes.
