Lost Lore Tequila Tahona Blanco (86 Proof)

The Earth & The Stone: Traditional Highland Power.

Lost Lore Tequila Tahona Blanco is a profound expression of heritage, meticulously crafted using one of the oldest and most revered methods in tequila production: the Tahona stone mill. This artisanal spirit honors the Lost Lore of traditional distillation, capturing the true, unadulterated heart of the High-land (Los Altos) Blue Weber Agave.

The fully mature agave piñas are slow-cooked in traditional stone/brick ovens, and then the cooked agave is crushed by a massive, two-ton volcanic stone (the tahona). This slow, labor-intensive process—which includes the agave fibers (bagasse) in the fermentation—extracts a richer, earthier, and more concentrated agave juice. Bottled at a bold 86 Proof (43% ABV), this high-proof blanco is robust, pure, and intensely flavored, standing as a benchmark for additive-free, old-world tequila.

Tasting Notes

  • Nose: Bright and upfront with intense cooked agave sweetness, perfectly framed by a distinct minerality and a whisper of salinity. Underlying notes of citrus zest, cinnamon, and black pepper add complexity and warmth.
  • Palate: The mouthfeel is surprisingly oily and full, beautifully coating the palate despite the high proof. The flavor is driven by rich, sweet agave, quickly followed by a vibrant punch of jalapeño and black pepper spice that builds in intensity. A clean, crisp citrus note cuts through the earthy, mineral undertones.
  • Finish: Clean, long, and humming with lingering sweet agave and persistent peppery spice. A subtle, almost vinous brightness from the champagne yeast fermentation carries the intense flavors through to a satisfying, warm close.

This Tahona Blanco is a bold, sweet, and spicy powerhouse. It perfectly marries the high-proof intensity with the deep, earthy complexity provided by the traditional Tahona milling, making it an exceptional sipper and an absolute standout in any cocktail.

What is the difference between Tequila & Mezcal?

Tequila is a type of mezcal, much like how scotch and bourbon are types of whiskey.

Tequila and mezcal are both types of agave-based spirits that are popular in Mexico, but there are some key differences between the two. Tequila is made exclusively from the blue agave plant, which is primarily grown in the area surrounding the city of Tequila, about 40 miles northwest of Guadalajara. Mezcal, on the other hand, can be made from any type of agave plant, and is often made using traditional, labor-intensive methods.

One of the most noticeable differences between tequila and mezcal is their flavor. Tequila is typically smooth and subtle, with hints of fruit and spices, while mezcal has a more complex, smoky flavor that comes from the roasting of the agave hearts before they are fermented and distilled.

Another difference between the two spirits is their production process. Tequila is typically made using modern industrial methods, while mezcal is often produced using traditional techniques that have been passed down for generations. This can give mezcal a more authentic, artisanal character.

In general, tequila is considered to be a more refined and sophisticated spirit, while mezcal is often viewed as a more rustic and traditional drink. Both are popular in Mexico and are enjoyed around the world, so the best way to decide which one you like is to try them both and see which one suits your tastes.
