López Real Tobalá Artesanal
Maestro Mezcalero: Family Tradition
Agave: 100% Wild Tobalá (A. potatorum)
ABV: 45%
Location: Santiago Matatlán, Oaxaca
The Elegance of the "Wild Cup" Agave López Real hails from the world-renowned capital of Mezcal, Santiago Matatlán. Their Tobalá Artesanal is a tribute to the "King of Agaves," a small, wild variety that grows in high-altitude, shaded canyons. Because Tobalá does not produce "hijuelos" (offshoots) and must be grown from seed, it is a rare and precious find.
At 45% ABV, this expression is crafted for those who appreciate a gentler, more approachable proof, allowing the delicate, floral nuances of the agave to take center stage. It is produced using 100% traditional methods: cooked in an underground stone pit, crushed by a horse-drawn tahona, and double-distilled in copper stills.
Tasting Notes
- Aroma: A soft and inviting nose. It opens with the signature Tobalá sweetness—reminiscent of baked apples and honey, complemented by light floral notes of gardenia and a faint, buttery undertone.
- Palate: Incredibly smooth and creamy on the tongue. The 45% ABV makes it exceptionally sippable. You’ll find a harmonious blend of tropical fruit (dried mango and melon), sweet cooked agave, and a very light, integrated smokiness that feels like a distant campfire.
- Finish: Clean and uplifting. The finish is short to medium, leaving a pleasant trail of cinnamon, rose petals, and a touch of wet stone minerality.
Why We Love It at SF Tequila Shop
For our customers, the López Real Tobalá is the perfect "entry-level" wild agave spirit. While many wild mezcals lean into high-octane heat and intense earthiness, this bottle prioritizes balance and sweetness. It is an excellent choice for white wine drinkers or those who want a sophisticated, floral sipper that won't overwhelm the palate.
"López Real has managed to capture the wild spirit of the Oaxacan mountains in a bottle that is remarkably elegant and easy to love. It’s the quintessential afternoon sipper."

What is the difference between Tequila & Mezcal?
Tequila is a type of mezcal, much like how scotch and bourbon are types of whiskey.
Tequila and mezcal are both types of agave-based spirits that are popular in Mexico, but there are some key differences between the two. Tequila is made exclusively from the blue agave plant, which is primarily grown in the area surrounding the city of Tequila, about 40 miles northwest of Guadalajara. Mezcal, on the other hand, can be made from any type of agave plant, and is often made using traditional, labor-intensive methods.
One of the most noticeable differences between tequila and mezcal is their flavor. Tequila is typically smooth and subtle, with hints of fruit and spices, while mezcal has a more complex, smoky flavor that comes from the roasting of the agave hearts before they are fermented and distilled.
Another difference between the two spirits is their production process. Tequila is typically made using modern industrial methods, while mezcal is often produced using traditional techniques that have been passed down for generations. This can give mezcal a more authentic, artisanal character.
In general, tequila is considered to be a more refined and sophisticated spirit, while mezcal is often viewed as a more rustic and traditional drink. Both are popular in Mexico and are enjoyed around the world, so the best way to decide which one you like is to try them both and see which one suits your tastes.
