La Venenosa Raicilla Sierra del Tigre
The Bold Spirit of the High Sierra
Discover the rare and captivating La Venenosa Raicilla Sierra del Tigre, a testament to the artistry of master Taberenero Don Luis Contreras. Hailing from the high-altitude village of Manzanilla de la Paz, nestled approximately 2,000 meters above sea level, this exceptional raicilla embodies the unique terroir of the Sierra del Tigre mountains.
Crafted from the wild agave Inaquidens, locally known as Bruto, this spirit captures the essence of the coniferous forests where the agave thrives. Don Luis employs time-honored methods, roasting the mature agave hearts over smoldering wood embers in a traditional earthen oven. The fermentation and distillation process further contribute to its distinctive character, utilizing a unique Filipino-style ceramic still. With an annual production of only around 700 liters, this is a truly limited and highly sought-after expression of raicilla.
Tasting Notes:
- Prepare for a powerful and distinctive aromatic profile. The Sierra del Tigre edition often presents a bold scent that can be surprisingly reminiscent of blue cheese, a characteristic that sets it apart and intrigues the adventurous palate. Underlying this unique note, you may also detect earthy undertones from the roasting process, hints of pine and other forest botanicals from its high-altitude origin, and a subtle smokiness.
- On the palate, this raicilla delivers a robust and complex flavor. The agave's intensity is evident, often accompanied by a savory quality that echoes the blue cheese aroma. You might also find notes of wild herbs, minerality, and a lingering smoky finish. The texture is typically full-bodied and warming.
- Due to its pronounced character, La Venenosa Raicilla Sierra del Tigre is traditionally savored at the end of the night. It is a contemplative spirit to be enjoyed slowly and deliberately. It's a bold and unforgettable experience for those seeking the true, untamed essence of raicilla.

What is the difference between Tequila & Mezcal?
Tequila is a type of mezcal, much like how scotch and bourbon are types of whiskey.
Tequila and mezcal are both types of agave-based spirits that are popular in Mexico, but there are some key differences between the two. Tequila is made exclusively from the blue agave plant, which is primarily grown in the area surrounding the city of Tequila, about 40 miles northwest of Guadalajara. Mezcal, on the other hand, can be made from any type of agave plant, and is often made using traditional, labor-intensive methods.
One of the most noticeable differences between tequila and mezcal is their flavor. Tequila is typically smooth and subtle, with hints of fruit and spices, while mezcal has a more complex, smoky flavor that comes from the roasting of the agave hearts before they are fermented and distilled.
Another difference between the two spirits is their production process. Tequila is typically made using modern industrial methods, while mezcal is often produced using traditional techniques that have been passed down for generations. This can give mezcal a more authentic, artisanal character.
In general, tequila is considered to be a more refined and sophisticated spirit, while mezcal is often viewed as a more rustic and traditional drink. Both are popular in Mexico and are enjoyed around the world, so the best way to decide which one you like is to try them both and see which one suits your tastes.
