La Luna Ensamble Bruto & Chino 200ml Flask
A Wild and Harmonious Expression of Michoacán
Explore the untamed spirit of Michoacán with the La Luna Ensamble Bruto & Chino, presented in a convenient 200ml flask. This exceptional ensamble mezcal is a testament to the rich biodiversity of the region, artfully blending two distinct and compelling agave varieties: the robust, wild Maguey Bruto (Agave inaequidens) and the elegant, cultivated Maguey Chino (Agave cupreata). Crafted by the esteemed Maestro Mezcalero Hernan Hernandez in Indaparapeo, this small-batch offering captures the essence of traditional mezcal production.
Every drop of La Luna Mezcal tells a story of heritage. Made at Destiladora Las Azucenas in Etucuaro, Villa Madero, the Pérez Escot family has been passionately crafting mezcal on the same property since 1910, now spanning four generations. For this unique ensamble, the agaves are slow-cooked in a traditional underground pit oven, imparting a deep, earthy smokiness, before being meticulously distilled in a traditional copper and pine still. The result is a complex, balanced, and truly authentic spirit that pays homage to its roots.
Tasting Notes:
- Nose: An alluring and complex aroma that immediately signals its wild origins. Notes of cooked agave are beautifully intertwined with a pronounced, yet elegant, smokiness from the pit oven. Hints of fresh pine and damp forest floor emerge, complemented by a vibrant herbaceousness and subtle floral undertones. There's a delicate minerality and a whisper of green bell pepper, adding intriguing depth.
- Palate: The palate is incredibly dynamic and full-bodied, showcasing a fascinating interplay between the two agave varieties. The Maguey Bruto contributes a bold, untamed character with notes of green, vegetal spice, and a touch of brininess. The Maguey Chino gracefully softens and sweetens the experience with hints of tropical fruit, such as roasted pineapple, caramel, and a creamy texture. The integrated smoke is persistent but well-balanced, providing a warm, earthy backbone. A lively peppery spice dances on the tongue, leading to a complex and evolving flavor journey.
- Finish: The finish is long, clean, and exceptionally satisfying. The initial smoky notes gently fade, leaving behind a delightful warmth, lingering sweetness from the cooked agave, and a persistent minerality. Herbal and earthy nuances continue to echo, culminating in a dry, inviting aftertaste that speaks to its artisanal craftsmanship and the purity of its ingredients.
This 200ml flask of La Luna Ensamble Bruto & Chino is your perfect companion for savoring the nuanced artistry of traditional Mexican mezcal, whether enjoyed neat or as the intriguing base for a sophisticated cocktail.

What is the difference between Tequila & Mezcal?
Tequila is a type of mezcal, much like how scotch and bourbon are types of whiskey.
Tequila and mezcal are both types of agave-based spirits that are popular in Mexico, but there are some key differences between the two. Tequila is made exclusively from the blue agave plant, which is primarily grown in the area surrounding the city of Tequila, about 40 miles northwest of Guadalajara. Mezcal, on the other hand, can be made from any type of agave plant, and is often made using traditional, labor-intensive methods.
One of the most noticeable differences between tequila and mezcal is their flavor. Tequila is typically smooth and subtle, with hints of fruit and spices, while mezcal has a more complex, smoky flavor that comes from the roasting of the agave hearts before they are fermented and distilled.
Another difference between the two spirits is their production process. Tequila is typically made using modern industrial methods, while mezcal is often produced using traditional techniques that have been passed down for generations. This can give mezcal a more authentic, artisanal character.
In general, tequila is considered to be a more refined and sophisticated spirit, while mezcal is often viewed as a more rustic and traditional drink. Both are popular in Mexico and are enjoyed around the world, so the best way to decide which one you like is to try them both and see which one suits your tastes.
