Jose Cuervo Tradicional Añejo

Origin: Jalisco, Mexico Composition: 100% Blue Agave Size: 750ml ABV: 40% (80 Proof)

Introducing a historic milestone in the Cuervo legacy: the first-ever Añejo in the Tradicional line. Rooted in the original 1795 family recipe, Jose Cuervo Tradicional Añejo is a 100% agave masterpiece that bridges the traditions of Mexico and Ireland. This premium spirit undergoes a sophisticated dual-barrel aging process. It is first matured for at least 12 months in charred, new American oak barrels to develop its robust character.

In a nod to the Cuervo family’s ties to the Emerald Isle, the tequila is then finished in single malt Irish whiskey barrels. This unique finish imparts an extraordinary smoothness and a cross-cultural complexity that sets it apart from any other Añejo on the market.

Tasting Notes

A beautifully balanced aged spirit that offers the depth of a fine whiskey with the soul of premium agave.

  • The Nose: Rich and inviting. Deep aromas of toasted oak and roasted agave are layered with the sweet, malty influence of Irish whiskey. You'll find hints of dried fruits, nuts, and a touch of honey.
  • The Palate: Luxuriously full-bodied and complex. The initial flavors of cooked agave and rich vanilla are complemented by the distinct, smooth character of single malt whiskey. Subtle notes of cinnamon and dark chocolate emerge, framed by the smoky sweetness of charred oak.
  • The Finish: Remarkably long and velvety. The finish is characterized by a lingering warmth of spice and oak, leaving a smooth, sophisticated trail that invites another sip.

Why It Stands Out

  • A Historic First: This is the first Añejo expression in the storied Tradicional line, making it a must-have for collectors and enthusiasts.
  • Innovative Finishing: The use of single malt Irish whiskey barrels adds a "smooth and complex" dimension rarely seen in traditional Mexican spirits.
  • Old-World Craftsmanship: Adheres to the 1795 standards of 100% blue agave distillation, ensuring every drop is as authentic as it is refined.

Serving Suggestion

This is a "sipping tequila" in every sense of the word. Enjoy it neat or with a splash of water to unlock the delicate Irish whiskey notes. It also serves as a phenomenal substitute for whiskey in an Añejo Manhattan, adding a smoky, agave-forward twist to the classic cocktail.

What is the difference between Tequila & Mezcal?

Tequila is a type of mezcal, much like how scotch and bourbon are types of whiskey.

Tequila and mezcal are both types of agave-based spirits that are popular in Mexico, but there are some key differences between the two. Tequila is made exclusively from the blue agave plant, which is primarily grown in the area surrounding the city of Tequila, about 40 miles northwest of Guadalajara. Mezcal, on the other hand, can be made from any type of agave plant, and is often made using traditional, labor-intensive methods.

One of the most noticeable differences between tequila and mezcal is their flavor. Tequila is typically smooth and subtle, with hints of fruit and spices, while mezcal has a more complex, smoky flavor that comes from the roasting of the agave hearts before they are fermented and distilled.

Another difference between the two spirits is their production process. Tequila is typically made using modern industrial methods, while mezcal is often produced using traditional techniques that have been passed down for generations. This can give mezcal a more authentic, artisanal character.

In general, tequila is considered to be a more refined and sophisticated spirit, while mezcal is often viewed as a more rustic and traditional drink. Both are popular in Mexico and are enjoyed around the world, so the best way to decide which one you like is to try them both and see which one suits your tastes.
