Huaraches De Plata Raicilla:

The Untamed Soul of the Jalisco Highlands

Step off the beaten path and into the cool, mist-covered mountains of the Sierra Occidental. Huaraches De Plata Raicilla is a vibrant, unaged expression of Jalisco’s most historic and artisanal agave spirit. While Tequila is the world-famous export, Raicilla is the "Spirit of the People", a rustic, traditionally crafted distillate that remained a local secret for centuries. Named "Silver Sandals," Huaraches De Plata represents the pure, crystalline essence of the agave before it ever touches a barrel. It is a spirit of high-definition clarity, showcasing the botanical complexity and "wild" character that can only be found in the rugged Jalisco backcountry.

The Primitive Craft

Wild & Semi-Cultivated Agave: Crafted using traditional methods where the agave is roasted in earthen pits or adobe ovens, imparting a unique, grounded sweetness.

Natural Fermentation: Utilizing only ambient, wild yeasts from the mountain air, which contributes to the spirit's complex, "lactic" fruitiness.

Small-Batch Distillation: Produced in limited quantities by local taberneros, ensuring that the raw, herbal soul of the plant is captured in every bottle.

Tasting Notes

  • Appearance: Brilliant, diamond-clear, and exceptionally bright. Nose: A captivating and sharp bouquet. It leads with bright lemongrass and wet clay, followed by a distinct herbal punch of eucalyptus and a hint of fermented tropical fruit (like tepache).
  • Palate: Bracing and full of life. The entry is a wave of green bell pepper and lime pith, transitioning into a savory mid-palate of roasted agave and a touch of sea salt. It possesses a leaner, more "metallic" mineral edge than its "Oro" counterpart.
  • Finish: Clean, dry, and electric. A lingering warmth of white pepper, anise, and fresh mint leaves the palate feeling refreshed and ready for another sip.

What is the difference between Tequila & Mezcal?

Tequila is a type of mezcal, much like how scotch and bourbon are types of whiskey.

Tequila and mezcal are both types of agave-based spirits that are popular in Mexico, but there are some key differences between the two. Tequila is made exclusively from the blue agave plant, which is primarily grown in the area surrounding the city of Tequila, about 40 miles northwest of Guadalajara. Mezcal, on the other hand, can be made from any type of agave plant, and is often made using traditional, labor-intensive methods.

One of the most noticeable differences between tequila and mezcal is their flavor. Tequila is typically smooth and subtle, with hints of fruit and spices, while mezcal has a more complex, smoky flavor that comes from the roasting of the agave hearts before they are fermented and distilled.

Another difference between the two spirits is their production process. Tequila is typically made using modern industrial methods, while mezcal is often produced using traditional techniques that have been passed down for generations. This can give mezcal a more authentic, artisanal character.

In general, tequila is considered to be a more refined and sophisticated spirit, while mezcal is often viewed as a more rustic and traditional drink. Both are popular in Mexico and are enjoyed around the world, so the best way to decide which one you like is to try them both and see which one suits your tastes.
