Fuenteseca Cosecha (2020) Blanco
Fuenteseca Cosecha 2020 "La Tuna de Arriba" Blanco is a masterclass in vintage-dated, terroir-driven agave spirits. Crafted by legendary Master Distiller Enrique Fonseca at NOM 1146, this limited-edition, additive-free blanco captures the distinct thumbprint of a single harvest.
The 2020 vintage features fully mature Pinto Blue Weber agave grown at an extreme elevation of over 6,700 feet in the iron-rich, red volcanic soil of San Ignacio Cerro Gordo in Los Altos (Jalisco Highlands). After a slow cook in low-pressure autoclaves and distillation in copper alembic pot stills, the distillate was rested for 5 years in stainless-steel tanks prior to bottling. This extensive resting period allows the sharp edges of its high-proof presentation (45.7% ABV) to soften, integrating the complex flavors into an exceptionally viscous, rich, and cohesive spirit.
Tasting Notes
- Aroma: The nose is remarkably thick, pungent, and evolving. It opens with an explosion of deeply caramelized, sweet, cooked agave, layered with bright orange zest and crisp lime. As it breathes, it reveals a fascinating savory and vegetal complexity, offering notes of asparagus, green bell pepper, and fresh lemongrass balanced by a gentle floral lift, white pepper, and a hint of warm baking spice.
- Palate: On the palate, this blanco is exceptionally luxurious. It boasts a heavy, syrupy texture that completely coats the mouth with a velvety oiliness. The entry delivers a wave of rich, sweet cooked agave interwoven with vibrant citrus peel and orchard fruits. This quickly evolves into a complex mid-palate dominated by sweet cinnamon, nutmeg, and clove, underscored by a sophisticated mineral limestone character and a subtle, savory saline brine.
- Finish: The finish is remarkably long and warming, carrying the high proof with elegant structure and zero harsh burn. Lingering notes of cracked black pepper, caramelized agave sweetness, and orange pith continue to develop on the sides of the tongue minutes after the final sip.

What is the difference between Tequila & Mezcal?
Tequila is a type of mezcal, much like how scotch and bourbon are types of whiskey.
Tequila and mezcal are both types of agave-based spirits that are popular in Mexico, but there are some key differences between the two. Tequila is made exclusively from the blue agave plant, which is primarily grown in the area surrounding the city of Tequila, about 40 miles northwest of Guadalajara. Mezcal, on the other hand, can be made from any type of agave plant, and is often made using traditional, labor-intensive methods.
One of the most noticeable differences between tequila and mezcal is their flavor. Tequila is typically smooth and subtle, with hints of fruit and spices, while mezcal has a more complex, smoky flavor that comes from the roasting of the agave hearts before they are fermented and distilled.
Another difference between the two spirits is their production process. Tequila is typically made using modern industrial methods, while mezcal is often produced using traditional techniques that have been passed down for generations. This can give mezcal a more authentic, artisanal character.
In general, tequila is considered to be a more refined and sophisticated spirit, while mezcal is often viewed as a more rustic and traditional drink. Both are popular in Mexico and are enjoyed around the world, so the best way to decide which one you like is to try them both and see which one suits your tastes.
