Flame Tokay 'Heirloom Ranch' Lodi 2024

A Rare Orange Wine Legacy

Cases Produced: 90

The Flame Tokay 'Heirloom Ranch' Lodi 2024 offers a piece of viticultural history. This striking orange wine is crafted from a virtually extinct variety native to Algeria and now planted exclusively in the unique terroir of Lodi. It is produced by fewer than five winemakers globally, making it a true collector's gem.

The grapes are sourced from the venerable 'Heirloom Ranch' vineyard, planted nearly a century ago alongside Zinfandel, Mission, and French Colombard. The winery began this ambitious preservation project in the 2022 vintage and continues to produce only a very small, highly allocated amount annually.

Winemaking:

This spicy, rich, and intensely aromatic orange wine achieved its stunning color and complexity through a week-long fermentation on the skins. The wine was then patiently aged for five months in old French barrique, allowing the flavors to integrate and develop a profound texture.

Tasting Notes

  • Color: Deep, burnished gold to rich amber.
  • Aroma: The wine offers a highly aromatic profile bursting with notes of candied orange peel, dried apricot, marjoram, and a hint of gingerbread spice.
  • Palate: It is rich and textural, providing a compelling structure from the skin contact. Flavors echo the nose with an added dimension of saffron, quince paste, and a subtle, intriguing nutty complexity.
  • Finish: The finish is long, warming, and spicy, with balanced tannins and a refreshing core of acidity.
  • Food Pairing: This wine pairs exceptionally well with robust dishes such as Moroccan tagines, spicy curries, hard-aged cheeses, or roasted squash with herbs.

The Flame Tokay 'Heirloom Ranch' Lodi 2024 is a profound and singular expression of Lodi terroir and a near-forgotten grape.

What is the difference between Tequila & Mezcal?

Tequila is a type of mezcal, much like how scotch and bourbon are types of whiskey.

Tequila and mezcal are both types of agave-based spirits that are popular in Mexico, but there are some key differences between the two. Tequila is made exclusively from the blue agave plant, which is primarily grown in the area surrounding the city of Tequila, about 40 miles northwest of Guadalajara. Mezcal, on the other hand, can be made from any type of agave plant, and is often made using traditional, labor-intensive methods.

One of the most noticeable differences between tequila and mezcal is their flavor. Tequila is typically smooth and subtle, with hints of fruit and spices, while mezcal has a more complex, smoky flavor that comes from the roasting of the agave hearts before they are fermented and distilled.

Another difference between the two spirits is their production process. Tequila is typically made using modern industrial methods, while mezcal is often produced using traditional techniques that have been passed down for generations. This can give mezcal a more authentic, artisanal character.

In general, tequila is considered to be a more refined and sophisticated spirit, while mezcal is often viewed as a more rustic and traditional drink. Both are popular in Mexico and are enjoyed around the world, so the best way to decide which one you like is to try them both and see which one suits your tastes.
