El Tesoro Mundial Collection: Yamazaki Edition Añejo Tequila

A Groundbreaking Fusion of Two Craft Cultures The El Tesoro Mundial Collection: Yamazaki Edition is an extraordinary, one-time-release Añejo that bridges the traditions of Mexico and Japan. This exceptional spirit is the result of a rare collaboration, marrying the pure, traditional agave heritage of La Alteña Distillery (El Tesoro) with the masterful barrel-aging artistry of The House of Suntory's Yamazaki Distillery.

This Añejo begins its journey with El Tesoro's celebrated process—100% estate-grown Blue Weber agave, crushed by a volcanic tahona stone, and double-distilled to proof. It is then finished for 12 months in authentic Yamazaki 12-Year-Old Japanese sherry and wine casks. This unprecedented finish imparts a unique, complex layer of depth, creating a tequila that is simultaneously vibrant, elegant, and deeply layered. A true collector's masterpiece.

Tasting Notes & Profile

  • Appearance: Deep, captivating gold with brilliant amber and copper highlights.
  • Aroma: A complex and aromatic bouquet. Dominant notes of cooked agave are complemented by rich dry fruits, toasted almonds, and raw honey. Hints of delicate florals and a subtle backdrop of fresh tobacco and minerals introduce the Japanese cask influence.
  • Palate: Full-bodied, silky, and beautifully balanced. The initial agave sweetness gives way to layers of warm spices, toasted pecans, and raw honey. The Yamazaki casks contribute refined notes of sherry sweetness, dark chocolate, and toasted coffee beans, maintaining the signature El Tesoro minerality.
  • Finish: Long, lingering, and elegant. The finish beautifully balances the agave warmth with soft notes of seasoned oak, clove, and pepper, leaving a sophisticated trace of red berries and rich fruits from the Japanese sherry cask influence.

ABV: 42% (84 Proof) | Process: Aged in American Oak, then finished for 12 months in genuine Yamazaki 12-Year-Old Japanese sherry and wine casks.

What is the difference between Tequila & Mezcal?

Tequila is a type of mezcal, much like how scotch and bourbon are types of whiskey.

Tequila and mezcal are both types of agave-based spirits that are popular in Mexico, but there are some key differences between the two. Tequila is made exclusively from the blue agave plant, which is primarily grown in the area surrounding the city of Tequila, about 40 miles northwest of Guadalajara. Mezcal, on the other hand, can be made from any type of agave plant, and is often made using traditional, labor-intensive methods.

One of the most noticeable differences between tequila and mezcal is their flavor. Tequila is typically smooth and subtle, with hints of fruit and spices, while mezcal has a more complex, smoky flavor that comes from the roasting of the agave hearts before they are fermented and distilled.

Another difference between the two spirits is their production process. Tequila is typically made using modern industrial methods, while mezcal is often produced using traditional techniques that have been passed down for generations. This can give mezcal a more authentic, artisanal character.

In general, tequila is considered to be a more refined and sophisticated spirit, while mezcal is often viewed as a more rustic and traditional drink. Both are popular in Mexico and are enjoyed around the world, so the best way to decide which one you like is to try them both and see which one suits your tastes.
