El Tequileño Limited Edition Extra Añejo

A monumental milestone for the historic La Guarreña distillery (NOM 1108), the El Tequileño Limited Edition Extra Añejo is the first-ever Extra Añejo release from the legendary estate.

Masterfully created as a cross-generational collaboration between Gran Tequilero Juan Antonio Salles and his son, Master Distiller Jorge Antonio Salles, this ultra-premium spirit is an exquisite celebration of artisanal patience, tradition, and blending mastery.

Crafted from 100% estate-grown blue Weber agaves harvested from the mineral-rich highlands of Los Altos de Jalisco, the tequila is double-distilled in traditional copper pot stills using natural volcanic spring water.

The true artistry lies in its elite maturation program: a meticulously selected blend of unique barrels, including American White Oak (ex-bourbon) and fine French Oak, aged for a minimum of several years to achieve unparalleled depth, robustness, and a velvety, sophisticated finish while beautifully preserving the signature, vibrant cooked agave DNA that defines El Tequileño.

Tasting Notes

  • Appearance: Deep, rich amber with warm mahogany undertones and brilliant golden highlights. In the glass, it displays remarkable viscosity, leaving thick, slow-moving legs that reflect its long years of oak contact.
  • Aroma: Luxurious and exceptionally complex. The nose opens with decadent notes of French butter, rich toffee, and crème brûlée, layered over a core of sweet, deeply roasted agave. As it breathes, subtle top notes of orange zest, ripe papaya, dried stone fruits, and a faint hint of white chocolate and leather emerge.
  • Palate: A masterpiece of texture and balance on the palate, offering a silky, full-bodied mouthfeel. Dominant notes of sweet caramelized agave seamlessly merge with toasted oak, burnt orange peel, vanilla bean, and toasted walnut. A gentle, nuanced earthiness and subtle barrel spices provide a sophisticated contrast to the inherent sweetness.
  • Finish: Creamy, lush, and incredibly long-lasting. It glides elegantly off the side of the tongue, leaving behind a warm, persistent wave of baking spices, soft oak tannins, and a final, echoing reminder of sweet, natural agave.

What is the difference between Tequila & Mezcal?

Tequila is a type of mezcal, much like how scotch and bourbon are types of whiskey.

Tequila and mezcal are both types of agave-based spirits that are popular in Mexico, but there are some key differences between the two. Tequila is made exclusively from the blue agave plant, which is primarily grown in the area surrounding the city of Tequila, about 40 miles northwest of Guadalajara. Mezcal, on the other hand, can be made from any type of agave plant, and is often made using traditional, labor-intensive methods.

One of the most noticeable differences between tequila and mezcal is their flavor. Tequila is typically smooth and subtle, with hints of fruit and spices, while mezcal has a more complex, smoky flavor that comes from the roasting of the agave hearts before they are fermented and distilled.

Another difference between the two spirits is their production process. Tequila is typically made using modern industrial methods, while mezcal is often produced using traditional techniques that have been passed down for generations. This can give mezcal a more authentic, artisanal character.

In general, tequila is considered to be a more refined and sophisticated spirit, while mezcal is often viewed as a more rustic and traditional drink. Both are popular in Mexico and are enjoyed around the world, so the best way to decide which one you like is to try them both and see which one suits your tastes.
